Motion as Joiner and Separator

Meaning · English
Residing in a single substance, having no qualities, an independent cause of conjunction and disjunction: this is the definition of action.
What is an action, and how is it told apart from a substance or a quality? Kanada gives three marks. Karma here means physical motion, a body moving, not a moral deed. First, ekadravya: it lives in one substance only. The motion of a thrown stone is in the stone and nowhere else. Conjunction (samyoga), meaning contact, is different, because it sits in both things that touch. Second, aguna: it has no qualities of its own. A motion has no colour or weight. Those belong to the thing that moves. Third, it causes conjunction and disjunction (vibhaga, separation) and is anapeksha, needing nothing further. The Upaskara reads this as: once motion arises, contact and separation follow from it directly, without waiting on any extra factor. This sets action apart from a quality, which the previous sutra says is not such a cause. This is why action counts as its own category: on this definition, a quality does not by itself bring about contact and separation.
A rolling billiard ball leaves the cushion and strikes another ball. The rolling is in that one ball alone. The rolling has no colour or weight, only the ball does. The rolling alone parts the ball from the cushion and brings it against the next ball. Single bearer, no qualities of its own, direct cause of parting and meeting.
Modern ontology still debates whether events and processes are a basic kind of thing alongside objects and properties. Philosophers who treat events as real entities are close to Kanada in holding that change is not simply reducible to things and their features. Physics departs at key points. In Newtonian mechanics, steady motion is a state that needs no cause, and forces, not motion itself, explain changes. Relativity adds that motion is always relative to a frame of reference, so it does not sit in one body the way the sutra holds. The school's motion is a philosophical category, not a measured quantity. The sutra's sharper point still stands: contact and separation are changes in relation, and some account of change must explain them. Whether change is fundamental or derived remains open.
