Missing Effect, Present Cause

But the absence of the effect does not mean the absence of the cause.
The question is how cause and effect depend on each other. Just before this, Kanada said that when the cause is missing, the effect is missing too. Here he blocks the tempting reverse. If the effect is missing, it does not follow that the cause is missing. For Vaisheshika, a cause (karana) can be fully present while its effect (karya) has not yet appeared. Shankara Mishra's commentary explains why. A cause is what regularly comes before its effect and is not merely incidental. Put another way, it is that whose effect fails only when some helper is missing. But no cause works alone. It needs helpers. If even one helper is lacking, nothing happens, though the cause sits there intact. We learn what causes what by watching both ways, the commentary adds. Where there is no potter's stick to spin the wheel, there is no pot. Where the stick is present, a pot can come. So the dependence runs in one direction only. A missing cause guarantees a missing effect. A missing effect tells you only that something in the full set is absent. It does not tell you which thing. The commentary applies this one-way rule to liberation: remove false knowledge, and faults, activity, birth and suffering fall away in turn.
Think of a packet of seeds on a kitchen shelf. Months pass and nothing sprouts. Yet the seeds are there, whole and alive. What is missing is soil, water and warmth. The seeds stand for the cause, and the sprout for the effect. The bare shelf shows that an effect can fail to appear while its cause is fully present, waiting on its partners.
In today's terms, this is the line between a necessary condition and a sufficient one. Logic textbooks warn against flipping a conditional. 'No cause, no effect' does not give you 'no effect, so no cause.' Kanada's point fits that warning well. The commentary's way of testing causes, by checking when the thing is present and when it is absent, resembles what John Stuart Mill later called the methods of agreement and difference. The idea that a cause works only within a set of conditions is also close to how many philosophers now analyse causation. Hume asked a harder question: whether we ever see causal necessity at all, or only regular succession. Vaisheshika assumes the link is real and in the nature of things. That deeper question about what causation is remains open.
