Shared and Distinguishing Natures

Universal and particular: whether something counts as the one or the other depends on the understanding.

The question is how we tell a shared nature from a distinguishing one. Kanada's answer is that both are relative to cognition. Samanya, the universal, is the common nature many things share. Vishesha, as used here, is what sets things apart. For the Vaisheshika, the test is how the mind responds. Shankara Mishra reads this as: each is marked by the kind of thought it produces. When a thought runs on across many things, as in 'this is a substance, that is a substance', it points to a universal. When a thought cuts off, as in 'this is not a quality, not an action', it points to a distinguishing mark. He adds that there is a highest universal, existence, which every substance, quality and action shares. Lower ones, such as substance-hood, fall under it. A lower universal plays both roles. It gathers all substances together and also sets them apart from qualities and actions. So the same feature is universal from one side and particular from the other.

Picture a hardware store cabinet labelled 'fasteners', with drawers inside for screws, nails and bolts. The 'screws' label gathers every screw into one group, yet it also marks them off from the nails in the next drawer. Only the cabinet label covers everything. Substance-hood works like the 'screws' label. Existence works like the whole cabinet.

The closest modern discussion is the old problem of universals. Realists hold that shared natures exist in the world. Nominalists hold that only individual things exist, and the sharing lies in our words and concepts. The Vaisheshika is a realist school, yet this sutra makes the label 'universal' or 'particular' relative to the angle of view. Modern logic and taxonomy agree on that much. In any nested classification, a middle term like 'mammal' is general compared with 'dog' and specific compared with 'animal'. Cognitive science finds that people sort things at several such levels, and that both similarity and contrast shape how categories are learned. What remains open is whether these levels track real divisions in nature or reflect human interests. Biology's long debate over what counts as a species shows the question is still live.
