Being as a Real Universal
Vaisheshika Sutras 1.2.7
Meaning · English
That on account of which we say 'it is' of substances, of qualities and of actions: that is existence.
The question is simple to ask and hard to answer. A pot is a thing, its blueness is a quality, its falling is a motion. These are very different kinds of entry, yet of each one we say 'it is'. What licenses that single word across such different cases? Kanada's answer is a name: satta, existence. For the Vaisheshika, satta is a real universal, one common nature present in every substance, quality and action. The commentator Shankara Mishra explains why the sutra is framed this way. Thinkers disagreed about whether existence is a real universal at all, so Kanada offers evidence. The evidence is the repeated thought 'this is, this is' about all three kinds, or equally our use of the one word 'existent' for all three. A uniform thought or a uniform word needs a uniform ground, and that ground is satta. It follows that existence is something the three kinds share, not something any one of them uniquely is.
Picture a public library. Its novels, maps, music discs and board games share no shape, size or material. Yet every one carries the same library stamp, and that stamp is why you can call any of them 'the library's'. The items are substance, quality and action. The single stamp found on all of them is satta, the one feature that lets us say 'it is' of each.
Modern ontology asks the same question in its own terms: is 'exists' a property things have? Kant argued that existence is not a real predicate, since saying a thing exists adds nothing to the concept of it. Frege and later Quine treated existence as part of logical form, the 'there is' of quantification, rather than as a feature inside things. The Vaisheshika takes the opposite line, treating existence as a genuine shared nature, a realist view of universals. Nominalists deny there are any such shared natures, only similar things and shared words. Physics offers no test here: nothing measured corresponds to satta. Whether 'being' is a property, a logical device or a real common nature is still debated in metaphysics, and Kanada's argument from uniform thought and uniform speech remains one recognisable side of that debate.
