The uncaused endures

Whatever truly exists, and yet has no cause that brings it into being, that is eternal.
Some things begin and end. Is anything permanent, and how would we recognise it? Kanada gives a test with two parts. First, the thing must have no cause. A pot, a cloth or a body is put together from parts, so it began and can fall apart. Second, it must actually exist. Shankara Mishra's commentary explains why this second condition is needed. The absence of a pot before the potter makes it also has no cause, yet that absence ends the moment the pot appears. Adding 'exists' shuts it out. Only something real that nothing brought about passes both tests, and the Vaisheshika calls that eternal: no beginning and no end. The commentator also names the purpose. Having listed, defined and examined the nine substances, Kanada is preparing to show that the root of the material world is the paramanu, the smallest partless particle, rather than one primal matter. In the Vaisheshika view, a partless thing has nothing to be assembled from, so it meets the test.
A child builds a sandcastle on the beach. The castle had a maker and a moment it began, and the evening tide flattens it. The grains it was shaped from were not made by the child, and they still lie on the beach after the castle is gone. The castle is the caused thing, which begins and ends. The grains stand in for the uncaused atoms beneath it.
Today's ontology still asks Kanada's question: is there a bottom level of things that is not made of anything further? Physics gives a different answer about atoms. The chemist's atom has parts, was formed in the early universe or in stars, and can be split. Even elementary particles such as electrons can be created and destroyed in high-energy collisions. So no measured particle matches the paramanu. It is a philosophical posit, the point where division must stop, not something weighed in a laboratory. What holds up is the logic of the test: a thing with no parts and no cause offers nothing to come apart. Whether anything meets that test is still open. Some physicists treat fields, or conserved quantities such as energy, as the more lasting layer. Philosophers since Hume have questioned whether 'uncaused' must mean 'without beginning'.
