Why Atoms Stay Unseen

Perception happens in what is large, because it rests on many substances, and because of colour.
The question comes from a critic. Kanada posits the paramanu, the smallest partless particle of matter. He also holds that things with colour and touch can be sensed. So why has no one ever seen an atom? The sutra answers by naming three conditions the outer senses need. First, the object must be mahat, large, meaning it has real size. Second, it must rest on many substances, that is, be built from many parts. Third, it must have colour. Shankara Mishra's commentary explains why colour is added: without it, air would be visible, since air is large and made of parts. The colour must also be manifest, not overpowered. He argues that size and number of parts both matter. A spider's web four hands wide fades at a distance while the spider on it stays visible, because the spider packs more parts together. What follows, for the Vaisheshika, is that the atom goes unseen because it has no size of its own. Its invisibility does not count against its existence.
Think of a single pixel on a phone screen. From arm's length one dot is too small to make out, yet thousands lit together form a red letter you read at a glance. For Kanada the atom is the lone dot, below what the eye can catch. Perception begins only when many parts make a body with real size and visible colour.
Part of this matches what we know about vision. Seeing is not passive contact with things. Light must bounce off or come from an object, and the eye can only resolve detail above a certain size. A single atom is far smaller than the wavelengths of visible light, so no unaided eye or ordinary microscope can show one. Clear air is invisible for a related reason: it absorbs and reflects almost no visible light. Today, however, individual atoms can be imaged with instruments such as electron and scanning tunnelling microscopes. And the modern atom has parts, which the paramanu by definition lacks. Kanada's atom is a philosophical posit, reached by reasoning about where division must stop. It is not a measured particle. Whether colour belongs to objects or is built by the perceiver remains debated in philosophy of mind.
