Motion Without a Push
Vaisheshika Sutras 5.1.15

The moving of the jewel and the needle's creeping toward the magnet have the unseen as their cause.
Kanada has been listing what makes things move: a push, a blow, wind striking a straw. Some movements have no visible contact behind them, though. What moves those? His answer is adrishta, literally 'the unseen'. For the Vaisheshika, adrishta is the stored result of a person's good and bad deeds, which clings to that person's self and can set matter going. The sutra names two cases. The first is the jewel. Shankara Mishra explains that this means a jewel or bronze bowl, charmed by a spell, that travels toward a thief. The jewel is the thing that moves. Its link with the thief's self starts it moving, and the thief's own wrongdoing is the deeper trigger. The second case is the needle. He takes it to stand for any iron, and even a straw, drifting toward a lodestone. That motion, he says, is driven by the unseen merit of whoever it helps or harms. He extends the same cause to fire rising, wind blowing sideways, and the first stirring of atoms when the world begins.
Your phone buzzes on the table and slides a little. Nobody touched it, and nothing in the room pushed it. The cause is a message sent by someone far away, along a link you cannot see. The Vaisheshika reads the jewel and the needle this way: a real movement, with its cause outside the visible scene and tied to a particular person.
Physics now explains the needle without any reference to persons. Magnetism is an electromagnetic effect. It is impersonal, measurable, and works the same whoever stands nearby. Flames rise because hot gas is lighter than the air around it. Wind moves because of differences in air pressure. There is no evidence that a charmed object can track a thief. Even so, part of the method holds up. The school refuses to accept motion without a cause, and when no contact is visible it posits a hidden one rather than giving up. That is a respectable move. Newton himself was uneasy about gravity acting across empty space, until fields gave the idea a physical form. The open question is the moral side. Philosophy of mind still argues over how minds cause anything at all. Physics, though, finds no trace of merit steering matter.
