When the Arrow Drops

Vaisheshika Sutras 5.1.18

Meaning · English

When impetus is absent, a thing falls; its falling comes about because of its weight.

The arrow of the previous sutras has been flying on its own impetus. So why does it ever come down? Kanada's answer is that falling comes from weight, once the impetus is gone. Two terms carry the claim. Gurutva is weight. Vaisheshika counts it as a guna, a quality that belongs to a substance such as earth or water. Samskara here means stored impetus, the push a moving thing carries forward after the bowstring has let go. Shankara Mishra's commentary states the puzzle. If a single impetus drives the whole chain of motions, and that impetus is still there, the arrow should never fall. His reply is that weight never switches off. It is present for the whole flight and always tends toward falling. While the impetus lasts, it holds that tendency back. When the impetus is spent, the obstacle is gone, and the same weight produces the fall. Two things follow for the school. Falling, which is an action, has a quality as its cause. And a cause can be present while its effect is blocked.

A heavy door on a closing spring is propped open with a wedge. The spring pulls the whole time, yet the door stays put. Kick the wedge away and the door swings shut. The spring is weight, always pulling. The wedge is the impetus, holding that pull back. The closing door is the fall, which needs no new cause, only the removal of the block.

The closest modern match is the medieval impetus theory of Philoponus and Buridan. It also gave a thrown body an inner store of motion that gradually runs down. Newtonian physics replaced that picture. A moving body needs no stored force to keep moving, because it continues unless something acts on it. Gravity also does not wait for the impetus to run out. It acts from the first instant, so an arrow curves downward along its whole path while air drag slows it. Physics now treats weight as a gravitational force that varies with place, and the fixed property of the body is its mass. The causal pattern holds up better. A cause can be constantly present while its effect is held back by a counteracting factor. Philosophers of causation still discuss such preventers.
