Water Climbing the Tree

Vaisheshika Sutras 5.2.7

Meaning · English

The creeping of water up through a tree is brought about by the unseen.

Water poured on the ground runs downward. Yet water poured at a tree's root ends up in its leaves and fruit. What lifts it? Kanada's answer is short. The abhisarpana, the creeping of water all through the tree, is caused by adrishta. Adrishta means 'the unseen': the stored result of past actions that stays with each self and shapes what it later meets. Shankara Mishra, the commentator, gives the reasoning. The usual causes of motion are ruled out. No blow strikes the water, and the sun's rays do not draw it up. Still it moves, spreading through trunk and branches. The tree's leaves, stem, flowers and fruit will bring pleasure or pain to particular beings. Their unseen merit, linked with the water, starts the motion that carries it upward and grows the tree. So the Vaisheshika holds that where no visible cause explains a motion, an unseen one must be at work.

You stand outside a closed lift and watch the floor numbers climb. Nobody is pushing the car, and you cannot see any rope. You still never think it rises by itself. You conclude there is machinery out of sight. The lift's climb is the water's climb, and the hidden machinery is adrishta, the cause Kanada infers because the visible ones fail.

Plant biology now explains this rise in detail. As water evaporates from the leaves, it pulls a continuous column of water up through narrow vessels in the wood called xylem. Water molecules cling to each other and to the vessel walls, and pressure from the roots adds a little push. Nothing about this needs a moral cause, and adrishta, as merit tied to selves, has no counterpart in physics or botany. The method behind the sutra still deserves credit. Kanada noticed that falling and flowing could not explain upward motion, and he refused to call it causeless. Positing an unseen cause when known ones fail is also how science works, as with dark matter today. The difference is that science then tries to find and test the hidden cause. That is how the xylem story replaced the unseen one.
