The Mind Held Still

Vaisheshika Sutras 5.2.16

Meaning · English

When the mind rests in the self and that does not start up, the embodied one has no pain. This joining is yoga.

The question behind it: Kanada has just said that the mind moves the way a hand moves, and that pleasure and pain arise when self, sense, mind and object meet. If the mind is always moving, can anyone be free of pain? Vaisheshika's answer is to stop the mind's movement. The school treats manas, the mind, as a tiny inner instrument that must touch the atman, the self, for any experience to occur. Shankara Mishra's commentary gives the steps. A person no longer hungry for objects turns the mind back from the outer senses. It settles on the self alone. With no effort pushing it, no motion starts in it, so it grows steady. That steadiness is yoga, because yoga means the stilling of the mind. The 'that' which does not start is the mind's motion. On his second reading, it is pleasure and pain themselves. Yoga is called 'absence of pain' after its result. Pain belongs to the self as tied to a body, and it needs a moving mind to reach that self.

A record player keeps spinning, but someone has lifted the needle. The grooves are all still there, and nothing is wrong with the record, yet no sound comes out, because sound needs the needle's contact. The body and its causes of pain are the spinning record. The mind is the needle. Held still in the self, it makes no contact, and no pain is heard.

Vaisheshika's mind, an atom-sized organ that travels to the senses one at a time, has no counterpart in neuroscience. Its job description is close to what psychology calls attention. On attention, the idea holds up well. A family doctor would agree that pain is not a raw signal read off the body. Focus, expectation and mood shape how much it hurts, and meditation and distraction can reduce how unpleasant pain feels. Pain clinics use attention training for this reason. The stronger claim does not carry over. In most people, a stilled mind softens pain rather than switching it off. The self as a separate substance is a form of dualism, still debated in philosophy of mind. Whether awareness can exist with no content at all is an open question in consciousness research.
