No Further Body

Vaisheshika Sutras 5.2.18

Meaning · English

When that is absent, contact ceases, and nothing arises again. This absence of contact and this non-arising together are liberation.

The question behind the sutra: if every life leaves traces that build the next body, how could the cycle ever stop? Kanada's answer turns on 'that', which points back to adrishta, the unseen force. Adrishta means the merit and demerit stored up by past actions, which Vaisheshika holds steers the self into bodies and experiences. Remove it and two things follow. First, the self's contact with a body ends. Second, no new body arises. Together these are moksha, liberation. Shankara Mishra's commentary sets out the chain. Insight into the self, won through yoga, destroys ignorance. Without ignorance, attachment, aversion and delusion fall away. Without them there is no driven action. Without action there is no birth, and without birth no suffering. Old merit and demerit run out by being experienced, and no new stock is made. He adds why 'non-arising' is needed: the world's periodic dissolution also leaves selves without bodies, but bodies return. In liberation they never do.

Picture an oil lamp that nobody refills. It keeps burning for a while on what is already in the bowl, then the flame goes out, and since no one pours fresh oil or strikes a match, it stays out. The oil in the bowl is stored merit and demerit, the burning is living through its results, and the lamp staying dark is the body that never arises again.

In modern terms this is a claim about personal identity and philosophy of mind. Vaisheshika treats the self as a lasting substance that is joined to a body and can come apart from it. Mainstream science works with no such substance. Today's broadly physicalist picture ties mind and memory closely to the brain, and there is no established evidence for rebirth or for a self that outlives the body. Whether consciousness is fully explained by the brain is still debated, which is the hard problem of consciousness, but that debate does not settle the Vaisheshika view either way. One part travels well. The chain from mistaken beliefs to craving and aversion, then to compulsive action, then to suffering resembles how cognitive therapy links distorted thinking to unhelpful habits and distress. That parallel concerns the mechanism only. It does not extend to the metaphysics of liberation.
