Why Selves Are Many

Vaisheshika Sutras 3.2.20

Meaning · English

The selves are many, because each one's lot is fixed apart from the others.

The question is whether one self lives behind all beings or many. Vaisheshika holds: many. The self, atman, is the one who knows, feels and wants. The reason is packed into one word, vyavastha, a settled allotment, each thing assigned its own place. Shankara Mishra's commentary spells it out. One person is rich, another poor. One is happy while another suffers. One is born to a high family, another to a low one. One is learned, another ignorant. If a single self lived in all of them, that self would be rich and poor, glad and miserable, at the same moment. The commentary then meets an objection. One person is a child, then a youth, then old, and stays one self. So why not one self across Chaitra and Maitra, two stock names for two people? Because one self can take opposite states at different times, but not at the same time. Since these lives differ side by side, the school concludes that selves are truly many, one to each life.

Several phones charge on one table. One buzzes with a message, another shows a missed call, a third sits silent at full battery. If they were all one device, a single screen would have to light up and stay dark at once. Different states at the same moment mark different phones. Kanada's school reads different fortunes, joys and griefs, held at the same time, as the mark of different selves.

The core of the argument is a principle modern logic shares: one and the same thing cannot have contradictory properties at the same time and in the same respect, a close relative of Leibniz's law. That part holds up well. Where today's philosophy of mind departs is in what is being counted. Most current accounts do not posit the self as a separate substance. They tie each subject of experience to a brain and body, so there are many subjects because there are many brains. Real questions stay open. Split-brain cases ask whether one body can host two streams of experience. And cosmopsychism, a recent cousin of the one-self view, answers exactly this kind of argument by saying a single consciousness might divide into perspectives that do not share their states. Whether that reply works is still debated.
