What 'I' Points To

Vaisheshika Sutras 3.2.9

Meaning · English

Because the word 'I' is kept for one thing and applied to nothing else, the self is not something known from scripture alone.

The question behind the sutra is whether we know there is a self only because sacred texts tell us so. The sutra just before it floated that idea. Kanada answers no. The key term is vyatireka, exclusion: the word 'I' (aham) is used for one thing and withheld from everything else. We never say 'I' of a pot, a wall or the sky. For Vaisheshika, a word that every speaker uses so steadily for one inner thing must have a real object. The Upaskara, the later commentary on these sutras, reads it this way. None of the other eight substances is what the word picks out: earth, water, fire, air, ether, time, space and mind. So the word names a ninth, the self. Everyone uses 'I' without consulting any text. So, for this school, the self is known from ordinary experience and not from scripture (agama) alone. Scripture may agree, but it is not the only way in.

Think of a house key that turns one lock and no other. Try it on the shed, the car or the neighbour's gate, and it fails each time. On the front door it works without fail. You need no manual to know that door exists. In Kanada's view the word 'I' behaves like that key. It fits one thing only, and that steady fit is the evidence.

Modern philosophy of language agrees that 'I' is special. It is called an indexical: it always refers to whoever is speaking. That cuts both ways. A word that reliably picks out the speaker shows that speakers exist. It does not by itself show that the speaker is a substance distinct from body and mind, which is what Vaisheshika concludes. Descartes made a similar move, from thinking to a thinking thing. Hume replied that when he looked inward he found only passing perceptions, never a self. That is close to the Buddhist objection this school spent effort answering. Cognitive science describes a self-model the brain builds, and children begin using 'I' correctly at around two. Kanada holds up on one point: self-awareness comes from experience, not only from texts. Whether it points to a separate self remains open.
