Breathing out and breathing in, closing and opening the eyes, life, the mind's movement, changes in one sense set off by another, pleasure, pain, desire, aversion and effort are the signs of the self.

No one has ever seen a self. So what tells us there is one? Vaisheshika's answer is a linga, a sign: something observed that lets us infer something unseen, as smoke points to fire. Shankara Mishra opens by noting that knowing is not the only such sign. Breath is one. Air, he says, naturally drifts sideways. Drawn up and pushed down through the body, it needs an effort, and an effort needs someone making it. In deep sleep a quieter, life-sustaining effort keeps it going. Blinking, the lids shutting and parting, runs on all day with no outside push. Life means growth, wounds closing and broken limbs knitting. The mind's movement from one sense to another, and one sense stirring another, as the sight of a sour fruit waters the mouth, point the same way. Pleasure, pain, desire, aversion and effort are qualities. For Vaisheshika a quality must belong to some substance. That substance is the self.

A house across the street whose owner you have never met. Curtains open each morning and close each night. A cracked window is replaced within days. Smoke rises from the chimney. You never see anyone, yet you are sure someone lives there. The body is the house, the breath and blinking and healing are the curtains and repairs, and the self is the unseen occupant inferred from them.

Physiology explains the first group of signs without an inner agent. A rhythm generator in the brainstem drives breathing, even in sleep. The diaphragm moves air by changing pressure, so the argument about air's natural sideways drift does not hold. Spontaneous blinking is set by brain circuits, and healing is cellular repair. The broader idea that life needs a special animating principle, called vitalism in the West, was largely given up as biochemistry advanced. The second group is another matter. Pleasure, pain, desire and effort are felt experiences, and why there is anything it is like to have them is the hard problem of consciousness, still open. Whether they need a single owner is also disputed: Hume found only a bundle of perceptions, while others argue for a unified subject.
