Remembering the Mighty Hero

Hanuman Chalisa 38

Meaning · English

Troubles are cut away and every pain is wiped out for whoever keeps in mind Hanuman, the hero of great strength.

Two things go, in two different ways. Sankat, a crisis pressing in from outside, is cut, katai, the way a cord is cut. Pira, the pain carried inside, is wiped away, mitai. The condition is small: sumirai, to call someone to mind, to keep remembering. Balbira is the strong hero, the one who in Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas leaps the sea to find Sita. Tulsidas states it as plainly as a fact, the way devotees have always held it.

A child lost in a crowded market stops crying the moment she spots her father's tall shoulders above the heads. Nothing about the crowd has changed yet, but the fear loosens because someone strong is in view. Remembering Hanuman is like that sighting: the line's promise rests on keeping the strong one in sight of the mind.
