Grace as a Guru Gives

Hanuman Chalisa 39

Meaning · English

Victory, victory, victory to you, Hanuman, my master. Be gracious to me, the way a guru is gracious.

Tulsidas cries "jai," victory, three times, the way a crowd keeps calling a name it loves. He names Hanuman "gosain," master, the title given to a holy man. Then comes the request itself: "kripa karahu," be gracious, show kindness. The last words set its terms: "gurudev ki nain," in the manner of a guru. He is not asking a distant lord for a favour. He is asking to be treated as a teacher treats a student he has taken on.

A violin teacher stands behind a small student, one hand over the child's hand on the bow. When a note squeaks, the teacher does not walk out or scold. The hand presses gently and guides the arm again. That is the grace Tulsidas asks of Hanuman: kindness that corrects, and stays close while it does.
