जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई। छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥

Whoever recites this a hundred times is set free from bondage, and great happiness comes to them.

The promise is plain. Anyone who reads the Chalisa through a hundred times is let out of bondage, the line says, and great happiness follows. The word for bondage is the word for a captive: someone held, tied, locked in. Devotees have long read it both ways, as release from an actual confinement and as release from whatever holds a person fast. The line does not say how. It names the reading, the number, and two results: first the loosening, then the joy.

Picture a tight knot in a wet rope. One tug does nothing. Someone works at it, the same small pull again and again, and somewhere along the way it gives and the rope runs free. The hundred readings are that patient working. The loosened rope is the release the line names, and the ease afterward is its happiness.

जो कोई इसका सौ बार पाठ करता है, वह बंधन से छूट जाता है और उसे बड़ा सुख मिलता है।

वचन स्पष्ट है। पंक्ति कहती है कि जो कोई चालीसा का सौ बार पूरा पाठ करता है, वह बंधन से छूट जाता है, और उसके बाद बड़ा सुख आता है। बंधन के लिए यहाँ जो शब्द है, वही बंदी का भी शब्द है: कोई जिसे पकड़ा गया हो, बाँधा गया हो, बंद किया गया हो। भक्त बहुत समय से इसे दोनों तरह से पढ़ते आए हैं, किसी सचमुच के कारागार से छुटकारे के रूप में भी और उस हर चीज़ से छुटकारे के रूप में भी जो मनुष्य को जकड़े रखती है। पंक्ति यह नहीं बताती कि ऐसा कैसे होता है। वह पाठ, संख्या और दो फल गिनाती है: पहले बंधन का ढीला होना, फिर आनंद।

गीली रस्सी में पड़ी एक कसी हुई गाँठ की कल्पना कीजिए। एक झटके से कुछ नहीं होता। कोई उस पर लगा रहता है, वही छोटा-सा खिंचाव बार-बार देता है, और कहीं बीच में गाँठ खुल जाती है और रस्सी मुक्त होकर सरक जाती है। सौ पाठ वही धीरज भरा श्रम हैं। खुली हुई रस्सी वही छुटकारा है जिसकी बात पंक्ति करती है, और उसके बाद की सहजता उसका सुख है।
