Shiva Stands Witness
Hanuman Chalisa 41
Meaning · English
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa will meet with fulfilment, and Gauri's lord stands as witness to that word.
The promise is simple. Whoever reads this Chalisa will reach success, in the sense of a task carried through to its end. Then Tulsidas names who stands behind the promise. Gauri is Parvati, so Gauri's lord is Shiva, and Shiva is called as witness. Tulsidas chooses him for a reason. In the Ramcharitmanas it is Shiva who tells Rama's story to Parvati. So the one who first told the tale vouches for this small hymn to Rama's servant.
A loan agreement or a marriage certificate carries one more signature at the bottom: a witness, someone respected who saw the promise made and will speak for it later. The terms are the writer's; the witness lends them weight. Tulsidas writes down his promise about reading the Chalisa, then puts Shiva's name on that witness line.
