Make Your Home Here

Hanuman Chalisa 42

Meaning · English

Tulsidas is forever the servant of Hari. Lord, come and make your home here, inside my heart.

Tulsidas puts his own name into the last line, as poets of his day did. Sada means always. Hari is a name of Vishnu, and for Tulsidas that name points to Rama. A chera is a servant who stays close to his master and learns by serving. Nath means lord, and here he turns to Hanuman. Dera is a lodging, a place where someone settles and stays. After lines about what reciting brings, the poet asks for only one thing: that Hanuman come to live in his heart.

Some guests visit for an afternoon and leave. Then there is the grandparent who moves in: their chair by the window, their slippers at the door, their voice in the kitchen each morning. Tulsidas is not asking Hanuman for a visit while the hymn is being sung. He asks for the second kind of presence, settled and daily.
