Rama had just heard about the worth of good company, and he was glad. He spoke again to Dattatreya. "You have told it truly, master. Good company is the cause of good, and I have seen it with my own eyes. Whatever company a person keeps, that is the fruit they receive. Even the women of that house gained greatly from Hemalekha's company. Now I want to hear more. How did she bring Hemachuda to wakefulness? Please tell me at length, you who are an ocean of kindness." Dattatreya answered him. "Listen, Bhargava. I will tell you a story that purifies whoever hears it." And he began with the prince, after Hemalekha had spoken to him.
Hemachuda had listened to her words, and now he found every pleasure flat and tasteless. Disgust had risen in him, and he looked like a man whose mind was elsewhere. Yet old habits, built over many years, still held him. He could not drop his pleasures suddenly, and he could not enjoy them either. He said nothing to his beloved, because he was deeply ashamed. He spent some days like this, anxious and troubled. When he did indulge, he remembered her words and blamed himself even as he ate and drank. Habit pulled him toward pleasure, then he saw its faults, and grief followed. His mind swung back and forth like a seat on a swing.
Nothing comforted him now, not food, clothes, jewels, women, carriages, or even his close friends. He grieved without pause, like a man who had lost everything. His face lost its colour and his eyes grew dull. Hemalekha noticed, and one day she found him alone. "My lord, you used to glow with joy, and now you seem to be mourning. Why are you like this? Is some illness troubling your body? The wise say that in pleasures there is always the fear of disease. The body runs on three humours, and when they fall out of balance, illness spreads. Food, clothing, speech, sight, touch, time, place and action can all upset them. Treatment is given once imbalance exists, but no one offers a cure where none has arisen. So tell me, dear one, where does your sorrow come from?"
The prince answered her. "Listen, dear, and I will tell you why I grieve. Whatever gave me joy before, your words have struck down. I see nothing now that makes my happiness grow. The king may hand a man every comfort, but it does not please a man condemned to die. In the same way these pleasures bring me no joy. When I enjoy them, I feel like someone seized and forced into labour. So I ask you, my love, tell me. What can I do to find happiness?" Hemalekha heard him out, and she began to understand what had happened inside him.
She thought to herself, "He has grown truly weary of pleasures because of my words. So there is a seed of good in him, or he would not be like this. People who have no such seed are not moved by talk, and they never stand out from others even a little. But whoever has long worshipped Tripura, the bright goddess in the heart, ends up in a state like his." She was very learned and wanted to wake him, yet she kept her learning hidden and spoke through another's story. "Listen, prince. Here is something that happened to me long ago."
"When I was young, my mother gave me a friend to play with. She was good by nature, but she fell in with a bad woman. This friend had a wondrous power to create all kinds of marvels, and my mother never noticed it. She became dearer to me than life itself, and I followed her everywhere. I could not stay without her for even half a moment. That bad woman was a dancer, full of shifting moods. She was led into hidden ways by her own son, a deep fool with eyes that swam from drink. He seized my friend and enjoyed her while I watched. She never left me, and his touch reached me too. A son was born, a fool's image, who grew up quickly and restless. His father's folly and his grandmother's skill at marvels both lived in him. The grandmother was called Shunya, the father Mudha, and the boy Asthira."
"My friend had been pure from birth, but long company with the bad one stained her. She came to love those people deeply, and little by little she gave up her love for me. I was simple by nature, and I could not break from her. I was helpless and followed wherever she went. Then Mudha, who enjoyed her at all times, set out to take me by force as well. I was never truly in his power, yet the whole world blamed me. People said, 'The fool enjoys her.' My friend left her son Asthira in my care and went back to her lover's arms. I raised and fed Asthira properly. When he was grown, with his grandmother's consent, he took a wife."
"Her name was Chapala. Each moment she took a different lovely form, always the one her husband liked, and so she held him in wonder under her power, for she was very skilled. Asthira could cross hundreds of leagues in an instant, going and returning, and he never grew tired. Wherever he wished to go, Chapala took the shape he loved, stood waiting there, and delighted him. So Chapala lived joined with Asthira, and she bore five sons. All five were devoted to their mother and father, and each was strong in a different way. My friend entrusted those five to me, and they lived on in my care."
