These powers won through yogic concentration have been told in brief. Now hear from me which fixing of the mind brings which power, and how. The one who holds the mind on the subtle element, in me, the self of the subtle elements, and who worships that fine essence as mine, gains the power called anima.
Three words carry the teaching. Siddhi is a power, from the root sidh, to succeed or be accomplished. Dharana is holding, from dhri, to bear or keep steady: the mind kept on one place. Tanmatra is "that only", the bare fine essence of each element, with nothing coarse around it. Anima is smallness, the first power on Krishna's list. The first line closes a summary. The powers have been named briefly, and each comes from a particular dharana. The second line opens the detail. Krishna now says which holding gives which power, and how. His first answer: the mind held on the subtle element, seen as Krishna himself, who is the self within the subtle elements. A worshipper who holds it so gains anima. The question behind it is Uddhava's: what is behind these eighteen powers, and how are they reached? Krishna answers with a method, not a promise. He teaches this inside a talk where he warns that for one who seeks him these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. Even here, the power is tied to Krishna. The mind rests on him as the self of the fine element, and the power is only a by-product. What it asks of the listener is to understand how the system works and to see where the weight falls. It does not ask the listener to chase anima.
A magnifying glass held over dry paper does nothing while it wanders. Held still, it gathers a wide patch of sunlight into one bright point. The mind held steadily on one fine thing is like that: scattered attention becomes a single point, and that gathering is what the verse calls dharana.
1. Sit for five minutes today, in a quiet corner, with one small thing before you: a candle flame, a seed, a single grain of rice. 2. Keep your eyes on its finest detail, the edge of the flame or the tiny mark on the seed. 3. When the mind wanders, notice where it went. Bring it back without scolding. 4. Afterward, note how many times it left and how long you managed to stay.
A girl sits at dusk threading a needle for her grandmother, whose hands shake too much to do it. The thread frays, the eye is tiny, and the light is going. She stops talking, stops thinking about supper, and puts all her looking on that one point. That is the shape Krishna describes: the mind drawn off many things and held on one fine thing. Her breathing slows. The room goes quiet around the needle. The thread goes through. The verse takes this ordinary narrowing of attention and aims it at Krishna as the self within the finest element, and names anima as the result for a worshipper who holds it so. That is the text's teaching, said in its own terms. In that dusk moment the girl is not promised any power. She is shown only what a held mind is like, and what steadiness feels like while it lasts. Ordinary experience confirms that a restless mind settles when it is given one small thing to do. The verse does not claim that this removes worry, fixes the grandmother's eyesight, or replaces a visit to the eye doctor.
