Meaning · English
The yogi who rests the mind, just as it stands, on me, whose self is the great principle, gains greatness, and the greatness of each element, one by one. The yogi who dyes the mind with me, who am made of atoms, the atoms of the elements, may gain lightness: the condition of what is as fine as the smallest measure of time.
Two powers are named, each tied to a way of holding the mind. The first is mahima, greatness, from mahat, the great. Mahat is the first vast principle from which the world unfolds, and Krishna says he is its self. The yogi rests the mind on him there, as it stands, without straining it into some other shape. The text says this gains greatness, and the greatness of each element separately. The second is laghima, lightness, from laghu, light or slight. Here the mind is made to take his colour, as cloth takes dye, while looking at him as the one who is made of atoms, the fine particles of the elements. The result named is a state of being as fine as the smallest span of time. The commentators differ on how literally to take that last phrase. Sridhara Svami reads these as results of fixing the mind on particular forms of the Lord. Krishna teaches this list to answer Uddhava's wish to know what yoga can bring. He also warns that for one who seeks him, these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. The teaching asks only that the listener know where these powers come from and what they are worth. It promises none of them.
A camera has one lens and two settings. Pulled wide, it holds a whole hillside in one frame. Moved close, it holds a single leaf, vein by vein. The same eye does both. The text sets the mind this way, on Krishna as the vast whole and on Krishna in the smallest particle.
1. Tonight, stand at a window or door for two minutes and look at the widest thing you can see, the sky or the far roofline. Remember that Krishna calls himself the self of the great whole. 2. Then hold a pinch of salt or a grain of rice in your palm for one minute. Remember that he calls himself the self of what is made of atoms. 3. Afterward, notice where your worry sits. Do not look for any power.
A man stands on a hillside at night, three days after his father's funeral. His mind keeps shrinking to one loop: the unpaid bills, the last argument. Then he looks up. The sky is far larger than the loop. Later he crouches and looks at an ant dragging a seed across the stone. His attention has gone somewhere else entirely. Ordinary experience confirms that attention takes the size of whatever it is given. Held on something vast, a worry finds its proper place beside it. Held on something tiny, the mind slows and steadies. Krishna's teaching adds what ordinary experience cannot: that the vast and the tiny are both his body, and that resting the mind on him there is the practice. The verse does not promise that the man will gain any power, and it does not lift his grief or pay a single bill. If sleeplessness or low mood goes on for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
