Meaning · English

Whoever holds the mind, with everything it contains, on me as the I-making principle, his mind set on me, gains reach: he becomes the self of all the senses. Whoever holds the mind on me as the great Self, the thread that runs through everything, gains unobstructed wish and the highest station, from me, born of the unmanifest.

Two powers are named, and each is tied to where the mind rests. The key words: prapti comes from a root meaning to reach or get to, so it is reach. Ahamtattva joins aham, I, with tattva, the principle of a thing: the part of creation that makes the sense of I. Sutra is a thread. Prakamya comes from kama, wish: a wish that meets no resistance. Krishna says that whoever rests the mind on him as that I-making principle, in its mind-side form, and keeps his own mind on Krishna, becomes the self of all the senses. The text takes this as reach through every sense as though each were his own. Whoever rests the mind on him as the great Self, the thread that strings all things together, gains prakamya and the highest station, the rank of the first-born of creation. Krishna adds that he himself is born of the unmanifest. The reason it is taught here is Uddhava's question about the eighteen powers. Krishna answers by pairing each with a place for the mind. He has already said the powers are obstacles and a waste of time for one who seeks him. Every line begins with the mind on Krishna, and the power is only a by-product.

A bead necklace lies in a heap, and each bead looks separate. Lift the thread and every bead rises together. The text offers the same picture: the thread through all things is Krishna, and a mind resting on that thread holds the whole, not just one bead.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes with the lights low and listen to every sound in the room, one after another. 2. Then notice who is listening. Say silently, "this hearing is lent to me." 3. Repeat with sight tomorrow morning, looking at one object for a minute. 4. If you notice a wish for any special ability, name it as a wish and let it go.

A mother stands in a crowded wedding hall, the music loud, three children somewhere in the crowd. Her eyes jump from sari to sari and her ears catch nothing. Her attention is split into a dozen pulls, and she is on the edge of panic. The verse would change this in small steps. She stops, lets one breath settle, and stops chasing each sound. Then she holds the whole room at once, the way a person holds a familiar tune, and the child's red shirt stands out. Ordinary experience confirms that a settled mind notices more than a scattered one. The text's own claims are larger: it teaches that the mind placed on Krishna as the self of the senses gains reach through all of them, and that is its teaching, not a technique. The limit is plain. In that hall the verse does not promise she finds the child, does not remove her fear, and does not replace asking the organisers for help.
