Lordship Through Narayana

Bhagavata Purana 11.15.15

Meaning · English

Let the mind rest on Vishnu, the lord over the three, who is time itself taking form. One who does so gains lordship over what urges on the knowers of the field and the field itself. Let the yogi who keeps to my dharma set the mind on me as Narayana, called the fourth, named by the word Bhagavan. That yogi reaches mastery.

Two powers are named, each tied to a different way of holding Krishna in mind. Ishitva means lordship, from ish, to rule. The text ties it to Vishnu, who rules over the three (the three qualities, or the three worlds, as the commentators read it) and who is time given a body. The one who rests the mind there gains rule over what drives the kshetrajna and the kshetra, the knower of the field and the field. The commentators take these as souls and the bodies they live in, and the urging that moves them. Vashita means mastery, from vash, to bring under one's will. It comes to the yogi who sets the mind on Krishna as Narayana, called turiya, the fourth. That name points to what stands beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep, and it is the one the word Bhagavan names. The yogi must also keep to Krishna's dharma. Krishna lists these powers to Uddhava so that he knows what yoga can bring. Krishna also warns that for one who wants Krishna himself, such powers are obstacles and a waste of time. They are described, not promised, and the verse asks for steadiness of mind, not for a result.

A kite flier stands in a field with the string held steady in one hand. The kite, far above, answers every small turn of the wrist. The mind kept steady on Vishnu and Narayana is the hand, and whatever the text calls lordship and mastery is the kite following.

1. Choose one ordinary moment today when you tend to be pulled along, such as the first minute after waking or a queue. 2. In that moment, say one name of Krishna, Vishnu or Narayana slowly, once per breath, for about two minutes. 3. When the mind drifts, notice where it went and return to the name without scolding yourself. 4. In the evening, recall whether any pull, such as a snack, a phone or a sharp reply, felt easier to wait out. Do not expect any power from this.

A taxi driver sits in a jam at noon. Someone has cut in front of him, the horn behind him will not stop, and heat rises in his chest. In the verse, Krishna tells Uddhava that the mind held on Vishnu, who is time itself, gains lordship over the urging of body and soul. For the driver, that begins small. He notices the heat, lets one breath go out slowly, and puts his attention on a single name instead of the insult. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind with something steady to rest on is harder to shove into a reaction. Slow breathing settles a racing body, and attention practised daily becomes easier to call back. The text's larger claims, lordship over the knower of the field and the field, and mastery through Narayana, are its own teaching and are not measured here. The verse does not promise that the jam clears, that anger never comes, or that a doctor is unneeded for a pounding heart. It describes where a yogi sets the mind.
