Lila: The Dead King Wakes
Yoga Vasishtha 3.51
The story · English
Vasishtha said: a cry went through the realm that the king had been killed in battle by the rival monarch. People stood stunned, and then dismay spread through the whole country. Carts piled with pots and household goods rattled down the streets. Women ran wailing through the crowded, blocked lanes of the city. Girls who fled in terror were seized on the road by their captors, and neighbors began to fear that neighbors would plunder them. From the enemy camp came the joyous shouting of soldiers, mixed with the roar of loose elephants and the neighing of horses that trampled men to death as they passed. The city that had been ordered and safe the day before had come apart in a single afternoon.
The royal treasury was broken open by brigands. The doors flew off, the vaults rang with their blows, and the guards, outnumbered, could not hold them. Countless treasures were carried away. In the palace, bandits and outcast marauders hunted through the royal rooms, and the queens and ladies were treated without mercy. A hungry mob stripped the royal storehouses of food. Soldiers snatched jewels from weeping children and trod them underfoot. Young women were dragged by the hair from the women's quarters, and gems fell from the robbers' hands and glittered along the road. The cruelty was everywhere, and nobody was left to forbid it. A thick gloom seemed to cover the day, as if the light had gone out with the king, Viduratha.
Meanwhile the victorious chiefs gathered with their horses, elephants and war-chariots, and Sindhu's minister announced that Sindhu's son would be crowned. Engineers decorated the city and its halls, and the balconies filled with the new royal party. The coronation took place amid shouts of victory, and the victor's noblemen were given titles and honors. The old royal party fled into the villages, and the soldiers chased them there. Pillage spread through every town in the land, and gangs of robbers blocked the roads. Lamentations of the grieving, cries of the dying, and the clatter of cars, elephants and horses grew so thick in the air that the noise seemed almost solid. Trumpets declared Sindhu's victory in every city, and his rule over the whole earth.
Sindhu entered the capital like a second Manu, come to people the world again after a flood of war. Tribute poured into his city from every side, loaded on horses and elephants, like cargo ships coming into the sea. He sent out edicts at once, struck coins in his own name, and set his ministers over every province. His rod of rule was felt in every district like the rod of Yama, and people feared sudden death. Soon every revolt and tumult sank to rest, as dust and fallen leaves settle when a storm is over. The country grew calm, like the sea of milk after the Mandara mountain had stopped churning it. Then the soft Malaya breeze blew, carrying away the smell of the slaughter. And in that moment the goddess of wisdom stopped Viduratha's life, as one stops the flight of one's own mind.
Now the scene turns to the room where the dead king's body lay in its tomb. Lila said to the goddess: "Tell me, goddess, how much time has passed since the king's corpse was laid here and I sank into deep meditation." The goddess answered: "A month. These maids of yours have been waiting here, thinking your body lay asleep in the room. Listen to what became of it. Within a fortnight it had withered and dried up, as cold and stiff as a log. The royal ministers thought you had died by your own hand and carried the body out. They laid it on a pile of sandalwood, sprinkled it with ghee, and set it alight, and it was ashes in a short while. Your household cried out that the queen was dead, wept bitterly, and then performed the funeral rites."
The goddess went on: "When they see you come back, they will be astonished, as if you had returned from the world of the dead. You no longer have your old form. It has become a purer one, shaped by what is in your heart. Everyone sees the world according to his inner feelings, as children afraid of devils often see ghosts. You have mastered the spiritual life and left behind your old body and its desires. To such a person the material body looks like an autumn cloud with no rain in it, or a flower with no scent. It is the thirty-first day since we came. I have put your maids into a deep sleep this morning. Come, let us show ourselves to the other Lila, the one who stayed." So they let themselves be seen, and the room filled with a light like the moon, the walls shining like gold.
The Lila who had stayed saw them and rose, then fell at their feet. "Victory to you, goddesses," she said. "I came here first to sweep your path." They received her kindly, and all three sat together on the bedding. The goddess asked her how she had come and what she had seen. She answered: "When I fell insensible at my death, I was wrapped in darkness like the new moon, and felt myself burning in a fire. I knew nothing, good or bad. Then I woke to find I had a new body, and I was carried into the sky, riding the winds like a scent, until I came to this house. I found it lit with lamps and guarded. I saw my husband Viduratha lying here under flowers, and I thought he was resting after the war, so I did not wake him."
The goddess said: "Lila, with your beautiful eyes, I will now raise the king's body to life." She breathed out the breath of life like the scent of a lotus, and it crept into the nostrils of the body as a vine creeps into a hole. It entered the heart as wind enters a bamboo pipe. Color came into the face of King Padma, like rain reviving a fading lotus. Slowly his limbs grew soft and golden, as a garden does when spring returns, and he shone like the full moon. He opened eyes as clear as the sky, raised himself like the Vindhya mountain, and called out in a deep, hoarse voice, "Who waits there." Both Lilas answered at once, "Your commands," and bowed at his feet.
The king saw two women of the same form, voice and manner, equally glad that he had risen. He asked, "Who are you, and who is she?" The elder Lila said: "Please listen. I am Lila, your wife from before, joined to you as sounds are joined to their meanings. The other Lila is only my reflection, made by my own will to serve you. The lady beside the bed is Sarasvati, goddess of wisdom and mother of the three worlds. Seat her on the golden seat. By our great merit she has come to us and brought us back from other worlds to you." The lotus-eyed king rose, a wreath of flowers hanging down and a strip of cloth around his neck, and bowed at her feet. "I hail you, divine Sarasvati. Give me understanding, riches and a long life." She touched him and said, "Be my son. May you have what you wish, and reach your blessed home in time. May all evil stay far from you, and may your realm fill with people."
"So be it," said Sarasvati, and vanished into the air. The people woke in the morning to find their king alive. He embraced Lila, who had come back to life as well, and they held each other, overjoyed. The palace rang with cheering and music, and the citizens crowded the courtyard to see him. Heavenly beings scattered handfuls of flowers from above, drums and conches sounded, and elephants trumpeted. Dancers' red palms and red turbans filled the sky like a field of red lotuses, and their veils shone like moons. People went home praising the queen's return with her husband from the other world. King Padma heard what had happened from his subjects, bathed in the waters of the four seas, and his ministers and Brahmans gathered to install him, like the immortals at the crowning of Indra.
