Chariot to the middle

Bhagavad Gita 1.21

Meaning · English

Arjuna said: Place my chariot in the middle of the two armies, Achyuta, the infallible One.

Arjuna asks for one thing: a position. Three words carry it. Ratham is the chariot, his seat and his station in the war. Sthapaya means place, make it stand still. Madhye means in the middle, between the two armies, where he can see both sides at once. Ubhayoh, both, matters here: he does not want a view of only the enemy. He calls Krishna Achyuta, the one who does not slip or fall, and he says my chariot, so the driver is his own friend and not a stranger. The plain sense is a soldier asking his driver to stop between the lines. This is Arjuna's request in his moment, not the book's teaching. His reason, given in the next verses, is that he wants to see whom he must fight before he fights. He is still confident and has not yet doubted. Shankara wrote no commentary on this chapter and begins at the second. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord of all takes the charioteer's seat at a devotee's word. Madhva reads the name Achyuta as pointing to the faultless Supreme being addressed as a friend.

A man about to step into a crowded wedding hall stops at the doorway and lets his eyes move across the faces before he picks a path. The doorway is the middle of the field. He is not leaving, but he wants to see the whole room before he goes in.

1. Pick one task you are dreading today, such as a hard talk or a form you keep putting off. 2. Before you start, stand or sit still for two minutes at the edge of it. 3. Say to yourself who and what is actually involved. Name each person and each step. 4. Notice whether the dread shrinks or grows once it has names. Then begin.

A woman waits outside a room where her family has gathered to settle her late father's house. Her hand is on the door and her chest is tight. Arjuna's request, as the text gives it, is to stop in the middle and look before anything is decided. She could do the same. She could stand a minute, breathe, and name who is in the room and what each person wants. She could notice which faces she is afraid of and which she simply expects trouble from. Then she could walk in having seen the whole room. Ordinary experience confirms that a clear look at a situation often steadies the body more than rushing at it. The verse does not promise the meeting will go well, and it does not take away grief or old quarrels. Arjuna himself is shaken by what he sees. Seeing is only the first step, and a person with real distress, such as long sleeplessness or panic, needs a doctor as well.
