Bhagavad Gita 1.22
Meaning · English
Let me look at all these men standing in ranks, eager for the fight, and see with whom I must do battle in this great combat.
Three phrases carry the sentence. Yoddhu-kama means "wanting to fight": yuddha is battle, kama is desire. Arjuna sees the other side as men who want this war. Avasthita means "standing arrayed", drawn up in ranks. Rana-samudyama is the "great combat", a whole undertaking being launched, not a skirmish. Arjuna asks to look at as many as stand ready and to learn kaih saha, "with whom", he must fight. The word yoddhavyam, "must be fought", shows how he speaks. He talks as a warrior who accepts the duty and only wants to know the faces. This is Arjuna's view in that moment, not yet the book's teaching. His reason is practical. The bow is raised, the fighting is about to begin, and he wants to measure the task before he acts. The request asks nothing of a reader beyond seeing a man take stock before the hardest day of his life. Shankara's commentary says little on this opening chapter and begins where Krishna starts to teach. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord has made himself a charioteer, so Arjuna gives his orders to God. Madhva likewise reads the scene as real events in which Krishna serves his devotee.
A batter walks out of the pavilion and stops at the boundary rope. Before taking guard he looks over where each fielder stands and which bowler is warming up. He is not yet playing. He is learning what he is about to face. Arjuna's request is the same pause before the first ball.
1. Pick one task today that you are dreading, such as a hard conversation or a pile of bills. 2. Before starting, sit for two minutes and write down, plainly, who and what is involved. Name each person and each piece of work. 3. Notice whether the list is smaller or larger than the dread was. 4. Then begin, or decide the time you will begin.
A man arrives at the village meeting about his late father's land. Before he sits, he scans the room and counts his cousins, the elders and the man who keeps the records. His chest is tight, and he has rehearsed his case all week. Arjuna's request fits that moment. The text gives Arjuna the wish to see exactly who is on the other side before he acts. The man might do the same in small steps. He names who is present, notes who looks angry and who looks uneasy, and lets the crowd become a list of people. Dread usually feeds on vagueness, and ordinary experience bears this out: a named worry is easier to hold than a shapeless one. Looking this way does not decide whether to argue or to give way, and it does not settle the dispute. It does not soften the pain of facing relatives across a table, and where a dispute turns dangerous it is no substitute for a lawyer or for the help of others.
