Having made many bodies by his own power, trees, crawlers, cattle, birds, biting insects and fish, the Lord was not content in his heart. Then he made the human being, and he was glad, for here Brahman can be seen. After many births one wins this rare human form. It does not last, yet it gives real worth. The steady person strives at once for the highest good, before death comes after him. Sense pleasure is found in every kind of birth.
The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, why the human body matters. Three words carry it. Dhira is the steady one, a person whose mind does not shake. Niḥśreyasa is the highest good, the one thing after which nothing better is left to want. Anumṛtyu means death following close behind, like a hunter on a trail. The verse first tells a story. The Lord made trees, snakes, cattle, birds, insects and fish by his own power, and none of them satisfied him. Then he made the human being and was glad, because only here can Brahman be known. The commentators read this as the reason human birth is called rare. The second half draws the lesson. This birth comes after many others. It is impermanent, yet it can bring the greatest gain. So the steady person acts quickly, before death arrives. The reason given is plain: sense pleasure is available in every womb, among animals as much as people. Only the human form can seek the highest good. The avadhuta has just spoken of the body as a teacher of detachment, and he now ends his account with this urgency. The text asks for promptness, with no anxiety in it, and for a sense of what this birth is for.
A ticket window opens only once in a long while, after years of waiting in a slow queue, and it closes at an hour nobody has posted. Someone who reaches the front does not stop to browse the stalls nearby. The window is the human birth, and the stalls are the pleasures found everywhere.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and write down the one thing you most want to have settled before your life ends. 2. Beside it, write one small step toward it that takes under ten minutes. 3. Do that step tomorrow, before checking your phone. 4. At day's end, notice which ordinary pleasures were easy to find and which one thing was not. Do not judge either.
A man of fifty-two stands at a cousin's cremation, younger than he expected anyone he knew to go. He thinks of the walks, the letter to his estranged brother and the quiet hour he has promised himself for years. The verse would change what happens next. First it names the feeling as the plain fact of a limited span, and he need not push it away. Then it asks what this birth is for, as opposed to what is merely available, since the text says pleasure is available everywhere. Then it asks for one act soon, and he can write the letter that night. Ordinary experience confirms that a deadline makes people choose more clearly. The verse does not remove the grief at the cremation, and it does not say how long anyone has. Where health is in doubt, a doctor's advice still comes first.
