So dispassion was born in me, and the light of lived knowledge shone in the self. Free of attachment, without the pride of being the doer, I wander over this earth. From one teacher alone, knowledge does not become steady or full. Brahman, the one without a second, is sung of by the sages in many ways.

Three words carry it. Vairagya is dispassion: the colour gone out of craving. Vijnana is knowledge that has been lived and not only heard, and the avadhuta calls it a light, aloka, lit in the self. Ahankriti is the making of an "I", the sense of being the one who does everything. The avadhuta, a free wandering brahmin, is speaking to King Yadu, and Krishna is retelling his words to Uddhava. He is rounding off his account of the twenty-four teachers and saying where they left him. Craving has lost its grip, and knowledge shines within. So he walks the earth tied to no one and nothing, and without the swollen claim that he is the one who acts. Then he gives the reason for having gone to so many teachers. Knowledge from a single teacher is neither steady nor full. The last line says why: Brahman, the one without a second, is sung of by many sages, each in his own way. One voice gives one side of what has no second, and the sages' differing songs fill it out. What it asks of the listener is to stay a learner, to listen widely, and to let each lesson loosen the grip instead of feeding pride.

A hill is photographed from the village road, from the river and from the far field. Each photograph looks different, yet the hill is one. A single teacher's words are like one photograph; the sages' many songs are the walk all the way round the same hill.

1. Pick one question you are truly unsure about, such as how to handle a hard relative or a habit you keep failing at. 2. This week, ask two or three people you respect, and listen to each for five minutes without arguing. 3. Write one line from each on paper. 4. Notice where their answers agree and where they differ. Keep what holds steady across them. 5. Tonight, notice whether any answer made you feel clever. Let that go and keep the lesson.

A young mother sits up at three in the morning with a baby who will not settle. Her mother-in-law has said one thing, the nurse another, and a book a third. She feels she must find the one right voice, and the hunt makes her more frantic. The verse's way is to treat each as one teacher, each with something true and none with all of it. She lists what the three share: warmth, a dark quiet room, a steady hand. She tries that first. Where they disagree, she watches her own child and sees which advice fits. Her grip on being the one who must get it perfect loosens, and she can act with a calmer mind. Ordinary experience confirms that one adviser shows only one side, and that points several people share are usually sturdier than any single claim. The limit is plain. The verse does not tell her which advice is right, and it does not replace a doctor. If the baby is feverish, hurt or unusually limp, she calls one without delay.
