Firm Ground Through Time

Yoga Sutras 1.14

Meaning · English

That effort becomes firmly grounded when it is carried on for a long time, without a break, and with earnest care.

Take the words one at a time. Dirghakala is a long time. Nairantarya is without gap; antara is an interval, so this means no breaks. Satkara is earnest care: doing a thing with respect, as one tends something valued. Dridhabhumi is firm ground; dridha is firm, bhumi is ground or footing. The word "that" points back to the practice just defined in the sutra before. Patanjali says it becomes firm ground only when three things meet. It goes on for a long time. It is not dropped for long gaps. It is done with care, not by rote. Any one alone falls short. Why say it? The sutras before name practice and ceasing from self-indulgence as the means, and describe practice as effort to stand steady. A student then asks how effort becomes dependable instead of a passing burst. Patanjali answers with duration, continuity and care. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the earnest care as austerity, self-restraint, knowledge and faith. The later commentators largely follow him.

A shortcut across a field. One walk leaves no mark. Walked every day for months, the grass wears away and the earth packs hard enough to hold a heavy step. Practice is the walking: long, daily, attentive, until the mind has a path it can stand on.

1. Choose one small steadying practice, such as sitting quietly and watching your breath, and give it the same time each day, perhaps just after waking. 2. Keep it to five minutes. A short daily stretch matters more here than one long sitting. 3. For the whole time, give it your full attention, as you would a guest. 4. If you miss a day, begin again the next morning and notice how the pull to quit feels.
