Meaning · English
Having cleared away, by inquiry, the mistaken sense of many separate things in the self, let him rest, his mind clean of dust, offering it to me, who am in everything. And if he cannot hold the mind steady on Brahman, then let him do all his actions for me, without looking for a reward.
Two key words carry this. Nanatva means manyness, the sense that the world is a heap of separate things, each pulling at me. Bhrama is a mistake, a wrong seeing, like taking a rope for a snake. Nirapeksha means not looking toward a result: apeksha is expectation, and the word says it has been set down. The first half describes the steady path. By inquiry, Krishna tells Uddhava, the false sense of many separate things in the self is cleared away. The mind is then virajas, free of dust, and it rests by giving itself to Krishna, who is present in all things. The second half is for the one who cannot do this. If the mind will not stay fixed on Brahman, Krishna does not leave him without a way. Let him do every action for Krishna, expecting nothing back. It is taught here because Uddhava is being shown how a bound person becomes free, and Krishna knows not every mind can sit still. So the teaching gives a second door. Sridhara Svami reads the second half as the way for one unable to hold the mind still. The listener is asked for something ordinary: work as usual, but hand the result over.
A man carrying water to a temple cannot keep a bowl steady on a rough road, so he gives up balancing it and simply walks the road, delivering each pot to the door. The steady bowl is the fixed mind; the delivery is action offered to Krishna without waiting for thanks.
1. Choose one task you will do today anyway: cooking, a call, a shift's work. 2. Before starting, say silently, "This is for Krishna." 3. Do it fully, and notice the moment you start wondering who will praise it or what it will earn. 4. At the end, let the result go in your mind, good or poor, and say "Taken."
A shopkeeper stands at the shutter at dawn, the rent due and the day's sales uncertain. His mind runs ahead to the till, to the neighbour's busier shop, to the figure he must reach. He cannot sit and quiet it, and he does not need to. The verse offers him another route. He opens, arranges the shelves, greets the first customer, and gives the day's work as an offering without fixing his eyes on the count. Step by step, attention returns from the imagined evening to the hands and the person in front of him. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on an outcome works worse than one given to the task. For Krishna, though, the point is not performance. It is that action offered with no demand upon its result keeps the mind clean. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, and it does not replace sensible planning, an honest ledger, or help from others when the money truly runs short.
