Full of trust, he hears my stories, which are blessed and make the world clean. He sings them. He remembers my birth and my deeds, and acts them out again and again. For my sake he does his duty, his pleasure and his earning, and he takes shelter in me. Such a man, Uddhava, wins unwavering devotion to me, the ancient one. With devotion won in the company of the good, he worships me. He finds with ease the place of mine that the good have shown him.

Krishna names three words that carry the teaching. Shraddha is trust, from the sense of setting the heart down on something. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Satsanga is company (sanga) of the good and the real (sat). Krishna starts with the person: someone who trusts enough to listen. He hears stories of Krishna, which he calls purifying to the world. Then the listening turns outward and inward. The man sings the stories, remembers Krishna's birth and deeds, and acts them out, again and again. Hearing, voice, memory and the body all take part. Next, ordinary life. The man does his duty, his pleasures and his earning for Krishna's sake, and takes Krishna as his shelter. The commentators read this as daily work offered up, not set aside. Nothing is dropped; it is all pointed one way. The result Krishna states is niścala bhakti, devotion that does not shake. He says it comes to the one who lives like this. The last verse names the source. Devotion won in satsanga lets a person worship Krishna, and such a person easily finds the place the good have shown. Why teach this now? Uddhava has just heard that learning and mental effort alone can be dry or hard to sustain. Krishna answers with a way that uses what everyone already has: ears, voice, memory, daily work and good company. The teaching asks for steady trust and repeated practice, held with people who already walk the road.

A footpath across a field starts as nothing. One person walks it and the grass bends. Daily feet press it into bare earth that holds in rain. Hearing, singing and remembering are the daily feet, and the steady devotion Krishna names is the worn path the mind finds without searching.

1. Choose one fixed time today, such as just before breakfast, and sit for five minutes with a story or a name of Krishna you already know. 2. Say or hum it aloud once, slowly, then recall one scene from it in silence. 3. Before a routine task today, such as cooking or a commute, say inwardly that you do it for Krishna's sake. Notice if your attention changes. 4. This week, spend half an hour with one person who speaks of Krishna with sincerity.

A woman gets home after a long day, still tight with an argument at work. She puts rice on to cook and begins humming a bhajan her mother sang. By the second line her shoulders drop. By the end she is thinking of her mother's kitchen, not the argument. The verse sketches that moment and extends it. The humming is singing, the memory of her mother is remembering, and the cooking can be offered as work done for Krishna's sake. If she later sits with others who share the song, the text calls that satsanga, the source of lasting devotion. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: familiar songs and shared stories, repeated daily with other people, settle a restless mind and give a day its shape. The limit is plain. A song does not end the argument, mend the job or cure a low mood that lingers. Those still need honest talk, rest and, where it is persistent, a doctor. What the text promises is the slow steadiness of devotion, built by repetition and good company, not relief on a single evening.
