Lord of the highest praise, what kind of person do you hold to be a true devotee? And what kind of devotion to you is the kind the good honour? Tell me this, overseer of every being, overseer of the worlds, master of the universe, for I bow to you, I love you, I have come to you for shelter. You are the Supreme Brahman, the boundless sky, the Person beyond nature. Yet you have come down, Lord, taking different bodies by your own will.

Uddhava has just heard Krishna describe the ways of devotion, and now he asks for something plainer: how do you recognise it? Two questions come first. Who is a sadhu, a true devotee? And what is bhakti, loving devotion (from bhaj, to share in), that good people actually honour? He is asking for marks he can check, not for a definition. Then he says who he is: someone who bows, who loves, who has taken shelter. In the text's own terms he is asking as a pupil, so the answer can be given freely. The last lines say who he thinks he is asking. Krishna is Brahman, the Supreme, the vast sky that holds everything. He is also purusha, the Person, beyond prakriti, which is nature, the stuff the world is made of. Yet Krishna chose to take bodies of his own will. The text presents this as the reason Uddhava can ask at all: the one who knows the answer has come within reach. Why is this asked here? Krishna has been talking about hearing, singing and giving all actions to him. A listener could fairly wonder what a person who really lives this looks like, and how to tell it from show. Uddhava puts that question for everyone listening. It asks of the reader a willingness to ask the plain question too, and to want an answer that can be checked.

A traveller stands in a crowded railway station and, before boarding, asks the clerk which platform the train leaves from and how to know it is the right one. Uddhava's questions work the same way: before walking a path, ask for the signs that tell a true devotee and true devotion from look-alikes.

1. Tonight, take five quiet minutes and finish this sentence in your own words: "A person I would trust to be truly devoted is someone who..." 2. Write down two or three answers. Keep them short and concrete, like how such a person treats someone who can give them nothing. 3. This week, notice whether anyone you know fits even one of them. Do not judge anyone. Just notice.

Meena has just moved to a new town. A neighbour invites her to evenings at a small spiritual group, and her mother is already keen. Meena feels pulled and wary at once. She is not sure whether the teacher is sincere, and she is embarrassed to ask. Uddhava's question gives her permission. She can ask, plainly, what a genuine devotee looks like and what real devotion looks like. First she writes down a few things she would hope to see: kindness to people who cannot repay it, honesty when it costs something, no pressure on anyone to give money or stay. Then she goes once, watches, and listens more than she speaks. She tests what she sees against her list, and she asks the neighbour questions rather than waiting to be told. Ordinary experience backs this much: a question asked before committing usually serves a person better than a hope carried in silence. The verse does not promise she will read the group correctly in one evening, or that asking will settle her doubts. It also does not replace advice from people who know her well when something feels wrong.
