Krishna tells Uddhava: The sadhu is kind and harms no one. He bears with every embodied being. Truth is his strength, his mind is free of fault, and he is even-minded and helps all. Desires do not shake his understanding. He is self-controlled, gentle, clean, and owns nothing of his own. He does not strive restlessly, eats in measure, and is peaceful and steady. He has taken refuge in me, and he is thoughtful. He is watchful and deep of nature, and patient. He has mastered the six. He wants no honour for himself but gives honour to others. He is skilled, a friend to all, full of compassion, and wise.
Uddhava asked what a sadhu is like, and Krishna answers with a long list. Three words carry most of it. Kripalu is the kind person, one whose heart moves when another suffers. Titiksha is forbearance, the strength to bear heat, cold, insult and delay without striking back. Akinchana means owning nothing, in the sense of claiming nothing as one's own. Taken clause by clause, the sadhu harms no one, bears with everyone, and rests on truth. He wants good for all and is even-minded toward them. Desires do not pull his judgment off course. He is restrained, soft in manner, clean, and not grasping. He does not scheme or strain after more, eats only what the body needs, and stays calm and steady. He is awake to danger, deep like water that does not ripple at every stone, and firm. He has mastered the six inner pulls, which the commentators list in their own ways. He gives honour and does not hunt for it. He is skilled at helping, a friend, compassionate, and wise. Through all this one line runs: he has taken refuge in Krishna. The list answers Uddhava's plain question. Krishna gives the marks of a person worth keeping company with, so that Uddhava can recognise such a one and learn from him. It asks the listener to measure these qualities against himself gently, and to notice them in others.
A village well in the dry season. It is deep and cool, and the rope goes down without any fuss. Anyone who comes draws water and no one is asked who they are. A sadhu is like that well: deep, steady, and open to all who come thirsty.
1. Pick one of these marks today: bearing with others, eating in measure, or giving honour. 2. At your next meal, stop when you feel pleasantly satisfied, not full. Notice how your mind feels an hour later. 3. In one conversation today, credit someone else by name for something good, and say nothing about your own part. 4. Before sleep, recall one moment you stayed quiet when you could have snapped. Notice what it cost you.
A taxi driver, long past midnight, is shouted at by a passenger who blames him for a missed train. Everything in him wants to shout back. The verse's picture of the sadhu changes that moment in small steps. He lets the first sharp sentence pass without answering it. He remembers the man is frightened about the train. He speaks evenly, offers what help he can, and drives on. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and hunger weaken restraint, which is why eating in measure and steadiness sit in the same list as kindness. The old idea of the six inner pulls has no exact modern match, and the text's idea of refuge in Krishna is its own teaching. None of this removes the sting of being insulted, and the verse does not ask anyone to stay where they are in danger. Forbearance here is a strength of the heart. It does not replace asking for help, or for a doctor, when real harm is done.
