Meaning · English

Knowing the merit and the fault in the duties I myself have laid down, the one who gives up all of them and worships me is the best among the good. Whether they know who I am, how vast I am, and what I am like, or do not know it, those who worship me with love that turns to no other, I count as the most devoted.

Four words carry it. Bhajeta comes from bhaj, to share in, to serve, so worship here is a kind of sharing. Ananya-bhava is a stance with no other in it: ananya, not another, and bhava, the inner feeling. Dharma is duty, what holds a life up: the rites, vows and rules Krishna himself has given. Sattama means the best among the good. In the first verse Krishna tells Uddhava that duties have a merit, since they steady and cleanse the mind, and a fault, since they can leave a person busy with doing and far from him. Having weighed both, the one who sets them all aside and worships him is the best of the good. The commentators take this as laying duties down for the sake of worship, not as carelessness. In the second verse Krishna says some people know who he is, how great, and of what nature, and some do not. It makes no difference to him if the worship is undivided. He counts such people the most devoted. Love is the measure, not learning. Uddhava had asked what a true sadhu is. After a long list of good qualities, Krishna names the heart of it: a love that is not split between him and anything else, and does not wait to be fully informed.

A small child sees her mother at the gate and runs. She cannot say her mother's height, her work, or what she earns. She does not pause to learn any of it first. Krishna's second verse is that running: love that goes straight to him, without needing the full account first.

1. Pick one ordinary duty you do daily, such as lighting a lamp, a short prayer, or a walk. 2. Before starting it tomorrow, pause for ten seconds and name whom it is for. 3. Do it slowly, with attention on that one person or on Krishna, not on finishing. 4. Afterward, notice whether the act felt like a task or like a visit.

A man sits by his mother's hospital bed late at night. In his hand is a list: medicines due, calls to make, forms for the morning. Every few minutes he checks it and looks at the clock. She is awake and watching him read. Krishna's verses ask what the list is for. The man puts it in his pocket, keeps the one task that cannot wait, and turns his chair toward her. He does not need to understand her illness fully or say the right words. He stays with his whole attention on her, and he does not scatter it. The second verse says love does not wait on knowing. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: people can tell whether they are being attended to or merely managed. The limit is plain. This does not cure her, ease his grief, or cancel the doctor's instructions. The text speaks of putting aside duties for the sake of worship, which is a different thing from leaving needed care undone.
