Meaning · English
Seeing my images and my devotees, touching them, worshipping them; attending on them, praising them, bowing low; singing my qualities and my deeds; faith in hearing my stories; and steady remembrance of me, Uddhava. Laying every gain before me, and giving oneself over to me in the spirit of a servant.
Krishna gives a plain list of ways to love him. Four words carry it. Darshana is seeing, from drish, to look: respectful looking, as at a face you are glad to meet. Paricarya is service, from car, to move: moving around someone to attend to what they need. Anudhyana is remembrance, from dhyai, to think, with anu, after: thought that keeps coming back. Atmanivedana is self-offering, from vid with ni, to lay something before another. Now the clauses. Krishna names his signs, meaning his images and forms, and his devotees. He says to look at them, touch them, worship them and look after them. Then come praise, bowing, and singing his qualities and deeds. Then faith in hearing his stories, then steady remembrance, and he calls Uddhava by name as he says it. The last two go furthest: laying every gain before him, and giving oneself the way a servant gives himself. The heading over this passage calls it the means of reaching true devotion. Eyes, hands, tongue, ears and memory each get a task, so no single gift is demanded of everyone. The commentators take the list as means, not as a test to be passed in full. It asks the listener to find which of these is already within reach.
A house has a front door, a kitchen door and a side gate. One cousin always arrives through the kitchen, another walks straight in at the front, and both end up at the same table. The ways of devotion are those doors, and the table is Krishna.
1. Choose one thing from the list that already feels natural: looking at a picture, singing a line, hearing a story, or helping someone. 2. Do only that, for five minutes, at the same hour each day this week, such as just after waking or while the kettle boils. 3. Afterwards, notice where your attention went and whether it settled. 4. At the week's end, keep it or swap it for another.
A young mother is awake at three in the morning with a newborn. She thinks she has no time for any practice, because she cannot sit still for an hour or read a book. The verse offers her a wider list than sitting still. Krishna names hearing, singing, bowing, serving and remembering, and each can fit inside a task she is already doing. She can rock the baby while listening to a story about him, or hum a line of praise on the walk to the kitchen. She can bow for a moment before the baby wakes, and offer the day's small gains to him at night. Ordinary experience confirms that a small act repeated at a fixed point in the day steadies the mind more than a large plan that never starts. The limit is plain. None of this gives her sleep or lightens the work, and it takes the place of no help from family or a doctor. The text offers a way of meeting the hours, and it does not change how many there are.
