Meaning · English

Krishna tells Uddhava: telling of my births and deeds, and rejoicing in my festival days. Holding festivals in the home with song, dance, instruments and gatherings. Going on pilgrimage, and making offerings at every yearly festival. Taking initiation, by the Vedic way or the tantric way, and keeping vows set aside for me.

Three words carry the verse. Parva is a festival day; the word also means a joint, like a knuckle or a bamboo node, so a festival is a joint in the year where ordinary time bends. Yatra is a journey, here a pilgrimage, from the root ya, to go. Vrata is a vow, from vr, to choose and bind oneself. Diksha is initiation, a formal handing-over of a practice by a teacher. Krishna lists what a devoted life does. It tells and hears the stories of his births and deeds. It is glad when his festival days arrive. It turns the home into a festival place, with song, dance, instruments and company. It travels to holy places. It makes offerings at each yearly festival. It receives initiation, and the commentators note that this follows either the Vedic or the tantric stream, according to one's lineage. And it keeps vows kept for him. Uddhava has asked how a person comes to true devotion, and Krishna answers with practices that can be done, not with a mood to be summoned. Each one gathers the day, the body and other people around him. The verse asks the listener to let the calendar, the journey and the promise carry the love when the heart alone is unsteady.

A rope hung with knots at regular distances is easier to climb than a smooth one. Festivals, journeys and vows are the knots in a year, giving the hands something to hold. Love for Krishna is the climbing, and these marked points keep it from slipping into the blur of ordinary days.

1. Find the next festival day tied to Krishna, or any day you choose this week, and mark it on your calendar. 2. On that day, tell one person, even a child, a single story of his deeds, in your own words, for five minutes. 3. Sing or play one song at home, with someone if you can. 4. Make one small vow for seven days, such as a fixed hour of quiet. Notice on day seven whether the vow held you steady.

A young man works in a city far from his village. It is festival evening, his hostel is quiet, and the day feels like any other. He phones home, hears the singing in the background, and feels more alone than before. The verse would change the evening in small steps. He would treat the day as marked, not blank. He would tell the story of the festival to the man in the next bed, or hear it from him. They would sing one song together, badly. He would make a small offering, a lamp or a fruit, and keep a short vow for the week. The day would then have a shape, other people in it, and something done by his own hands. Ordinary experience confirms that shared song, marked days and kept promises steady a restless mind, and that loneliness eases when there is something to do with others. The verse does not promise that the homesickness leaves, or that the festival will feel as it did at home. It also does not replace a doctor or a friend when low mood lasts for weeks. It offers a framework of acts that can be done even when feeling is thin.
