Meaning · English

Faith in my worship and in setting up my image, and effort for it, alone or together with others. Making gardens, groves and pleasure-grounds, and doing the work of the city's temples. Sweeping, smoothing the floor with a fresh coat, sprinkling water, laying out patterns. Looking after my house as a servant would, without pretense.

Three words carry the teaching. Shraddha is faith, a trusting that gives the heart to something before it has all the proof. Dasavat means 'like a dasa', a servant: someone who does the work without needing a title. Amaya means without maya, without trick or show. The words are Krishna's to Uddhava. The clauses go in order. First, faith in worshipping Krishna and in installing his image. Second, effort for it, on one's own or joined with others, so the work may be private or shared. Third, the building: gardens, groves, pleasure-grounds and the temples of the city. Fourth, the daily upkeep: sweeping, plastering the floor, sprinkling water, drawing patterns. Last comes the attitude, serving his house as a servant would, with no pretense. Why teach this here? Uddhava has asked how a person comes to true devotion. Krishna answers with a plain list of what devotion looks like in the hands. The commentators generally read these as offerings of ordinary labour, so even sweeping is worship. He is not asking for grand gestures. He is asking for faith that shows up in small, repeated work, done honestly, with no one watching for credit.

Think of a grandmother who rises before the household and wipes the doorstep, sets out a lamp, and waters the plant. Nobody praises it, and it is done every day. The steady, unshowy care is what Krishna asks of the one who tends his house.

1. Choose one small shared or sacred space: a prayer corner, a doorstep, or a shelf with a picture. 2. Tomorrow morning, spend five minutes sweeping or wiping it with your own hands. 3. Do it quietly. Tell no one and take no photograph. 4. Notice whether you wanted to be seen doing it, and what the plain work felt like without that. 5. Repeat it for a week.

A man has been laid off for a month. He can't sit still and he can't think. A neighbour asks for help sweeping and washing the courtyard before a gathering of the lane's families. He agrees without enthusiasm. With a broom in hand, the task is clear: one corner, then the next. His hands are busy, his breathing slows, and the loop of worry loosens a little. He is also working beside others, and the courtyard is visibly better by evening. Nobody asks what he does for a living. Krishna's list is built from this kind of work: humble, repeated, shared, and done for something larger than oneself. The 'without pretense' of the verse keeps it from turning into a performance. Ordinary experience confirms that using the hands on a simple task steadies a restless mind and that working with others eases loneliness. The verse does not promise the job will return, and it does not replace help for a low mood that stays.
