Without pride in oneself, without show, and without telling of what one has done: even the light of a lamp, once offered to me, should not be taken back for one's own use. Whatever in the world is most wanted, and whatever is dearest to oneself, let that very thing be offered to me. Such offering leads to the endless.

Krishna tells Uddhava how an offering is to be made, and what is to be offered. Three words carry the first half. Amanitva is having no puffed-up self-regard, from mana, measuring oneself against others. Adambhitva is having no dambha, the staged show of being good. Then comes not recounting what you have done. Giving that is announced or displayed turns into a purchase of respect. The lamp clause is a small picture of this. Light offered to Krishna is not to be borrowed back for reading by. The commentators take it as a rule against treating the offering as one's own property again. The second half names what to give. Ishtatama means the most wished-for thing, and atipriya the thing most dear to oneself. Krishna says to give those, not the leftovers. The reason is ananta, endless, from an-anta, without end. A giver who holds back the dearest thing keeps one place that is still for the self. The verse comes after a long list of ways to worship. It answers the question of what makes any of them true: the giver is not seeking credit, and the gift costs something. It asks the listener to look at motive first, and then at what is being held back.

Someone leaves a full pot of hot food on a neighbour's step, rings no bell, and walks home without waiting to be thanked. The pot is the dearest thing given, and the quiet leaving is the absence of show and of claiming the offering back.

1. Today, choose one small thing you value, such as an hour, a snack, or a seat, and give it to someone without saying you did. 2. Notice the urge to mention it later, and let it pass unspoken. 3. In the evening, light a lamp or candle for a minute, offer it in your mind to Krishna, and then do not use it to work or read by. 4. Name one thing you hold most dear, and just notice how it feels to name it.

A retired schoolteacher sits with her late husband's harmonium. The village school has asked for an instrument, and this one is the dearest thing she owns. She can already picture a small plaque with his name and hers. Krishna's teaching, as given to Uddhava, would change the moment in steps. First she asks whether she is giving the harmonium or giving a story about herself. Then she lets the plaque go, or lets it be the school's choice. Then she hands it over without keeping a claim on how it is played or who sits near it. The gift is complete only when she stops managing it. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a gift announced tends to be about the giver, and a gift quietly made often leaves both people lighter. The teaching does not promise that the empty corner of the room will hurt less, that grief will lift, or that the school will use the instrument well. It speaks to the manner of giving. It does not guarantee how the giver will feel afterward.
