Meaning · English
The sun, fire, the learned, cows, the devotee of Vishnu, sky, wind, water, earth, the self and all beings: gentle Uddhava, these are the places where I am worshiped. In the sun, honor me with the hymns of the three Vedas. In fire, with offerings of ghee. In the best of the learned, with the welcome due a guest. In cows, dear friend, with grass and fodder.
Krishna begins with a list. Puja-pada, his word for each item, joins puja, honor, and pada, a footing or seat: a place where honor can be set down. He names eleven such places, from the sun and fire to the learned, cows, the devotee of Vishnu, the five elements, the self and all beings. The second half starts to say how each is honored, and each place has its own gesture. The sun is honored with vidya, the knowledge held in the three Vedas, meaning its hymns. Fire is honored with havis, an offering poured into it, here ghee. A learned person is honored with atithya, guest-welcome, from atithi, the visitor who comes without a fixed day. A cow is honored with grass and fodder, which is plain feeding. Nothing here asks for a rare skill. Hymn, offering, welcome and feed are things a household already does. The commentators read the list as meant for a householder who cannot sit away from the world. Krishna gives it right after speaking of image worship and of offering what one loves most. His answer to a worried friend is that no one is shut out of worship. Uddhava is about to lose Krishna's bodily presence, and Krishna shows him that the world is full of places where he can still be met. What it asks of the listener is attention to the sun, the flame, the guest and the animal as places where Krishna is honored.
A ring holds a dozen keys. Each fits only its own lock, and the house key does nothing to the car. Yet it is one ring in one hand. Krishna names many places where he is honored, and each has its own fitting gesture: hymns for the sun, ghee for fire, a seat for a guest, grass for a cow.
1. Tomorrow, within an hour of waking, stand where you can see the sky or the light for two minutes. Say Krishna's name once and look, nothing more. 2. When someone comes to your door this week, stand up, offer water and a seat before anything else. 3. Give a handful of grass, a chapati or fresh water to a cow, bird or street animal, and notice who you are serving.
A young mother is up at five with a baby who will not settle. She walks to the window with him on her shoulder, and the sun is just clearing the rooftops. Usually she would not notice. The morning is only the start of a long list. Under this teaching, the sun is a place where Krishna is honored, so she lets herself look at it. She says his name once, without any ritual. Then she gives the baby the same unhurried attention, since the text counts every living being among the places of worship. Her tasks are the same, but the hour no longer feels like only a burden. Ordinary experience bears out one small part of this: a minute of looking at something outside oneself, such as light, a flame or an animal, often loosens a hurried mind a little. The teaching does not promise sleep, ease or an end to tiredness. If broken nights go on for weeks, or low mood sets in, a doctor should hear about it. Krishna's list says only that worship has many doors, and that a tired person may use the nearest.
