Krishna tells Uddhava: worship me in the devotee of Vishnu by honoring him as one of your own family. Worship me in the heart's open space by steady meditation. See the air as chief and worship me there. Worship me in water with offerings, water first. Worship me on the prepared ground with mantras. Offer enjoyments to the self within the self. And worship me, the knower of the field in every being, by regarding all alike.

This verse gives the second half of a list of seats where Krishna may be worshiped. Three words carry it. Vaishnava means a devotee of Vishnu; Krishna asks that such a person be honored the way you honor a relative, with warmth and not stiff ceremony. Dhyana, meditation, is the steady holding of the mind on one thing, here the open space of the heart. Kshetrajna means knower of the field: the body is the field, and the one who knows it is the knower. Krishna says he is that knower in every being. Then the clauses follow in order. Air is to be seen as the chief of the elements, since breath is what keeps a body alive. Water is honored with offerings, and water itself comes first. On cleared ground, worship is done with mantras. The self offers enjoyments to the self within, so even eating and pleasure can be given back. The last line closes the list: the same knower sits in everyone, so everyone is met with equal regard (samatva). Krishna teaches this because Uddhava needs a worship that does not end when the ritual does. It asks the listener to carry the attitude of worship into ordinary meetings with people and things.

Set out ten water pots in a courtyard on a still night. Each one holds its own small moon, bright and whole, though there is only one moon in the sky. The pots are the many beings, the moon is the one knower in all of them, and equal regard means seeing that each pot holds the same light.

1. Today, greet one person you usually overlook, such as a guard, a cleaner or a delivery driver, with your full attention and a real thank-you. 2. Before your next meal, pause for three breaths and offer the food silently before eating. 3. When you drink water once today, hold the glass for a moment and drink slowly. 4. At night, recall one person you were short with, and notice what you would change.

A man stands on a crowded railway platform at dawn, shoved from behind, late for work, and already sorting the people around him into obstacles. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in small steps. He notices his breath, the air that every person on the platform is also drawing in. He looks at the shoving stranger and credits him with the same inner knower the text names in every being. His shoulders drop a little, and he lets the person pass without a word. Ordinary experience confirms that a body at ease makes it easier to be fair to others, and that being treated with regard calms most people. The teaching does not promise that the train will be on time or that the crowd will thin. It also does not remove anger by decree, and it is no substitute for a doctor if constant irritability or racing breath points to something that needs care.
