Meaning · English

In each of these seats, one should meditate on my form: four-armed, peaceful, marked with conch, discus, mace and lotus, with a gathered and steady mind. Whoever worships me this way with a steady mind, through sacrifice and works for the common good, gains true devotion to me and remembrance of me, by serving the wise.

Three words carry this. Samahita means a mind gathered into one place, the opposite of scattered. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Smriti is remembrance, a memory kept alive rather than a fact once learned. Sadhu is a good person, one whose life shows what he speaks of. Krishna tells Uddhava to meditate on his form in the seats of worship just listed: peaceful, four-armed, holding conch, discus, mace and lotus. He asks for a steady mind and for worship. He adds sacrifice and works for the common good, such as digging wells or planting shade trees, done in the same spirit. The one who worships like this, with a gathered mind, gains two things: real bhakti, and a lasting remembrance of Krishna. The last clause names how it comes, through serving the wise. This answers the question Uddhava has been carrying: how does a bound person become free? Krishna's answer is not a single practice. A form held in mind, good work done openly and the company of good people all go together. The commentators take that last clause as the root of the rest. It also leads straight into the next verse, where Krishna says there is hardly another way.

A young sapling is tied to a straight stake in a garden. Left alone, it leans with every wind; beside the stake, it grows upright. The stake is the steady form held in mind and the company of the wise. The sapling is the restless mind, which learns to stand by being held.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with one calm image in mind. A lamp flame will do, or any sacred picture you love. Notice each time your attention leaves it, and gently bring it back. 2. This week, do one small useful thing for others with no credit attached: fill a neighbour's water pot, sweep a shared stair, or mend a bench. 3. Spend half an hour with the kindest, steadiest person you know. Notice what you carry away afterwards.

A taxi driver sits parked outside a hospital at three in the morning, waiting for a family to come out. His phone is in his hand, his thoughts jump between the fare, the rent and a cough his daughter has had for days. His shoulders are tight. The teaching speaks to that hour in steps. First, one calm image is chosen and returned to, so attention has somewhere to rest besides worry. Second, the breath slows, because a settled mind quietens the body, as ordinary experience shows. Third, the day holds some small useful act for others, which gives the waiting a purpose beyond the meter. Fourth, he seeks out people whose steadiness he trusts, because calm is caught from company as easily as worry is. The limit is plain. Krishna's teaching does not remove the rent, make the cough go away, or replace a doctor. It offers a steadier place to stand while those things are dealt with. The text's own promise, devotion and remembrance of Krishna, is a gift of the path itself, and it is given to those who keep at it.
