Meaning · English

Brahmin, you stayed in my house three nights without food, and you are a guest worthy of honor. My bow to you, and may I be well. In return for each night, choose a boon, three in all.

Three words carry the verse. Atithi means a guest, literally one who comes without a fixed day. Namasya means worthy of a bow, someone owed reverence. Vara means a boon, a chosen gift, from the root for choosing. Yama, lord of death, finds Nachiketas, a young brahmin, has waited at his door three nights unfed. Yama answers by bowing to him and asking for his own well-being, as if the host were the one at risk. Then he offers one boon for each night of waiting. The reason sits in the verses before: the text holds that a guest left hungry takes away a household's hopes and good deeds. Yama repairs the debt at once and gives more than the missing meals. The verse asks of the listener a plain seriousness about hospitality: a wrong is owed an answer, and the answer is made generously. Shankara, in his commentary, reads the offer as Yama's acknowledgment that a brahmin guest is revered, and the boons as amends for a fault committed by the host, not a favor.

A shopkeeper finds a customer has stood outside his locked door in the rain all morning. He opens, apologizes, pours tea, and presses a gift into the customer's hands. The shopkeeper is Yama, and the gift is more than the harm, because the wrong is felt and not just counted.

1. Today, notice one person who has waited on you: a delivery driver, a relative on the phone, a colleague outside a door. 2. Greet them by name or with a clear thank-you, and offer water or tea if they are with you. 3. If you have kept someone waiting this week, say so plainly and give them something in return: ten unhurried minutes, a call, a small meal. 4. Notice how it feels to repay a delay before being asked.

A man arrives at his sister's flat after a long train journey, and she is still at work. He sits on the stairs for two hours with his bag. When she comes home, she could say she had no idea. In Yama's place, she instead says she is sorry, feeds him, and asks what would help. The text teaches that a host who has kept a guest waiting owes more than the missing meal, and says so openly. Ordinary experience confirms that people forgive a delay faster when it is named and made good than when it is explained away. The verse also shows who goes first: the one with the power, Death himself here, bows to the one who waited. It does not promise that every apology is accepted, or that a wrong can be undone. It gives no help for harms that a meal or a gift cannot touch, and it does not replace care from a doctor for a guest who arrives ill or exhausted.
