Signs of a Self

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.10

Meaning · English

Desire, aversion, effort, pleasure, pain and knowing are the signs of the self.

The question is simple to ask and hard to answer: is there a self at all, and how would anyone know? For the Nyaya, the self is never seen directly. It is inferred from its liṅga, its signs, the way smoke is a sign of fire. Six states count as signs: desire, aversion, effort, pleasure, pain and knowing. Vatsyayana explains why. Desire works like this. You once enjoyed a certain kind of fruit. Now you see that kind again, and you want it. That wanting joins a past seeing to a present one, so one subject must hold both. Aversion does the same with things that once hurt. Effort is reaching for what is known to please. Pleasure and pain are felt by the one who remembers them and goes after their causes. Knowing joins three steps, wanting to know, weighing the possibilities and then knowing, and all three belong to one knower. A string of separate moments, each tied to its own object, could not do this joining. The Nyaya concludes that a lasting self exists.

Picture a building with a security camera in every corridor. Each camera records only its own stretch of hallway and knows nothing of the others. To follow one visitor from the lobby to the stairs, someone has to watch all the screens and connect them. The cameras stand for separate moments of awareness. The guard who links their footage is what the Nyaya calls the self.

The question now lives in philosophy of mind, under personal identity and the unity of consciousness. One position treats the self as a lasting subject, a substance view near the Nyaya's. Another is the bundle view, which Hume argued and which many Buddhists held long before him: there is only a stream of experiences and no owner beneath it. Physicalists say the brain does the connecting. Cognitive science agrees with Vatsyayana's premise that memory and desire need information carried across time. It locates that carrying in brain processes, though, not in a separate self. Split-brain cases and memory disorders show that this unity can come apart. So the argument holds up as a demand for something that connects experiences. Whether that something is a self, a brain or a pattern is still an open question.
