Meaning · English
Vada is the taking up of a thesis and its counter-thesis, where proof and refutation proceed through valid means of knowing and through reasoning, without contradicting accepted doctrine, and each argument has its five parts.
How can two people disagree and still be looking for the truth together? For the Nyaya, that kind of talk is vada. It begins when each side commits to a position: a thesis and its counter-thesis. Vatsyayana adds that the two must clash over the same thing, such as 'the self exists' against 'the self does not exist'. Each side then proves its case and refutes the other's by pramana and by tarka. Pramana is a valid means of knowing, such as perception or inference. Tarka is testing a claim by tracing what would follow if it were true. Proof and refutation interlock, Vatsyayana explains, until one view falls away and the other stands. No one may contradict the doctrine they have already accepted. Every argument must have five parts: the claim, the reason, an example carrying a general rule, the application to this case, and the conclusion. These conditions, he notes, let a few faults still be called out in vada, such as a missing part or a padded one.
Two hikers disagree at a fork about which trail leads down to the valley. Each one checks the map, points to landmarks, and walks a little way down the other's path to see where it goes. They stop when one path ends at a cliff. Both wanted to reach the valley. Winning the argument was never the point. That shared testing is vada.
The question lives in the philosophy of argument and in social epistemology: what makes a disagreement productive rather than a contest? Modern argumentation theory draws a similar line between a critical discussion aimed at resolving a difference and an eristic quarrel aimed at beating the other person. The Nyaya conditions resemble its rules: commit to a clear standpoint, defend it with acceptable evidence, and stay consistent with what you have granted. The five-part argument differs from Aristotle's three-part syllogism. It pairs the general rule with a concrete example and restates the claim as a conclusion, much as an informal argument that leaves its rule unstated (an enthymeme) would need to be filled out. Cognitive science adds a caution. People tend to defend their own side and are better at spotting flaws in others' reasoning. Whether rules alone can make debaters truth-seeking, or whether shared goals and good faith also matter, remains an open question.
