The Newborn's Remembered Feelings

Nyaya Sutras 3.1.18

Meaning · English

Because the newborn shows joy, fear and grief, which come from a chain of memory laid down by earlier practice.

The question is whether a person begins at birth or was already there. For the Nyaya, a newborn settles it. A baby clearly shows joy (harsha), fear (bhaya) and grief (shoka). Vatsyayana explains the argument in steps. First, the infant has not yet met, in this life, the things that cause these feelings, so they are not lessons from this life. We see the feelings only through signs such as a smile, a cry or a flinch, and we infer them from those signs. Second, such feelings arise only when a memory (smriti) links the present moment to something felt before. Third, that memory comes only from repeated past experience (abhyasa). Fourth, repeated experience needs an earlier life in which it happened. The Nyaya concludes that the self existed before this body. Vatsyayana adds that it will also continue after the body breaks apart.

Someone sits at a piano for the first time in twenty years, and their fingers find a tune before they can name it. Nobody watching would think the hands invented it on the spot. Hands that quick were trained long ago. In the Nyaya picture, the baby's ready smile and flinch are those hands, and the long-forgotten lessons are a former life.

The question belongs to the mind-body problem and the debate on personal identity: does a self outlast its body, or is it what a living brain does? Developmental psychology agrees with the Nyaya observation. Newborns do show startle, distress and pleasure before any learning could explain them. The mainstream explanation is different, though. These responses are inborn, shaped by evolution and carried in genes and the developing nervous system, so they need no earlier personal experience. That challenges the argument's second step, the claim that such feelings require memory. The older debate between rationalists, who held that some knowledge is inborn (Plato even spoke of recollection), and empiricists such as Locke, who called the mind a blank slate, has largely become a question of how much is innate. There is no accepted evidence for memories from past lives. Whether consciousness survives death remains open as a question of metaphysics, and science has not settled it.
