Fixing the mind on me, who am like open space, within the breath, and carrying the inner sound with the mind, the yogi, the swan, hears the voices of all beings there. Joining sight to the sun, the shaper, and the shaper to the eye, and meditating on me there with the mind, he sees the world from far away.
Three words carry the passage. Akasha is open space, the room in which everything else sits. Krishna calls himself akasha-like: present everywhere, touched by nothing. Prana is the breath, from pra and an, to breathe forth. It is the one thing that moves through body and mind alike, so the mind is fixed there. Tvashtri is the shaper, a name of the sun. The commentators take it as the power behind seeing. Now the clauses. First, the yogi rests his mind on Krishna within the breath and follows the inner sound with it. The text calls such a yogi a swan, one who sorts the true from the mixed. In that state he hears the voices of all beings. Second, he joins his sight to the sun and the sun to his eye, thinks of Krishna there, and sees the far-off world. Why teach this? Uddhava has asked about the eighteen siddhis, and these are two of them: far hearing and far seeing. Krishna lists them as results of fixing the mind on him. Notice that Krishna sits at the centre of each method. Elsewhere in the teaching, he warns that for one who seeks him these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. The text asks the listener to understand them, not to chase them.
A pond in a high wind shows nothing but broken light. Once the air drops, the same water holds the far hills, sharp and upside down. The hills were always there. The stillness of the mind is the calm, and the far voices and sights are the hills.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room and let your breath go on by itself. 2. Listen to the sounds around you, from the nearest to the farthest. Name each one silently. 3. Look out of a window at the farthest thing you can see, such as a tree or a roof. Hold it gently for a minute. 4. Close your eyes and say Krishna's name once, slowly. Notice whether the mind is quieter than when you sat down.
A mother stands in a crowded railway station with her small son lost somewhere in it. Loudspeakers, porters and trains all crash together. She stops, goes quiet, and listens for one voice. Her breath slows and her eyes stop darting. Out of all that noise, his call reaches her. The verse works along the same line. The mind steadies in the breath, rests on Krishna, and hearing and sight gather instead of scattering. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: a settled mind hears and sees more of what is actually in front of it. The text, though, goes further. It teaches that the yogi hears all beings and sees the far-off world, and it gives that as the yogi's attainment, not as a metaphor. The mother's calm will not bring her son back. The verse does not promise to find a lost child, or to cure fear, or to replace a stationmaster or a doctor when one is needed. It describes a skill of attention, and, as Krishna tells Uddhava, one that is not to be sought for its own sake.
