The Body Follows the Mind
Bhagavata Purana 11.15.21
Meaning · English
Having joined the mind well to me, and the body too, with the breath that follows it, by the strength of holding me in mind, the self goes wherever the mind is. And when, taking up the mind, one wishes to become some particular form, that very form becomes the mind's form, for one who rests on the strength of yoga in me.
Three words carry it. Yoga comes from yuj, to join or yoke: here the mind is yoked to Krishna. Dharana, from dhri, to hold, is holding the mind steady on one object, and Krishna names it as the source of the strength. Manorupa means mind-form, the shape the mind has taken. Krishna says that when the mind is joined firmly to him, the body and the breath follow it. Breath is the body's tie to the mind, so where the mind is placed, breath and body are drawn after it. The self is then found wherever the mind has gone. The second half carries this one step further. If such a person wishes to become some particular form, the mind takes up that form first, and the form follows. The commentators take this as the power of assuming any shape, one of the eighteen powers Krishna is describing. He is listing them for Uddhava, not recommending them. Krishna says plainly that for anyone who seeks him these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. They are described so that Uddhava knows what they are and how little they matter, and no power is promised. The point underneath is that the mind leads and everything else goes where it goes, so what the mind is joined to matters most.
An ox yoked to a cart. Wherever the ox is turned, the cart goes after it, wheels, load and all. The mind is the ox, the body and breath are the cart, and the yoke is the joining to Krishna that the verse names.
1. Once today, in a queue or at a bus stop, ask where your mind is, and notice what your shoulders and breath are doing there. 2. Sit for two minutes and hold one thing in mind: Krishna's name or a picture of him. Each time the mind wanders, bring it back to that one thing. 3. Afterwards, notice whether your breath and body have followed. Do this daily for a week.
A woman sits in a dentist's waiting room. Her mind is already in the chair, and she is rehearsing the drill. Her shoulders are up, her jaw is tight and her breath is shallow, though nothing has happened to her body yet. The verse speaks to this. The body goes where the mind has been sent. If she gives the mind one steady thing to hold, a name, a line, the weight of her feet on the floor, the mind stops running ahead. The breath often lengthens on its own and the shoulders drop a little. Ordinary experience confirms that a frightened mind tightens the body and a held mind loosens it. The teaching of taking any form belongs to the text's own account of yoga, and it is told as the tradition's teaching. In that waiting room the verse does not take away the drill or the need for the dentist, and it does not remove fear entirely. It shows only that the body follows where the mind has been placed.
