The accomplished yogi who wishes to enter another's body should fix his own self there in thought. Leaving his own frame, the life-breath enters it, turned to air, as a six-footed bee moves from flower to flower. Pressing the heel against the lower opening, he lifts the breath up through heart, chest, throat and head. By the opening at the crown he leads it to Brahman, and lets the body go.
Three words carry this. Parakaya means another's body, literally 'other-body'. Prana is the life-breath, the force that keeps a body alive. Brahmarandhra is the 'opening of Brahman', the place at the crown of the head. Krishna describes two things a perfected yogi can do. First, he can enter another body: he settles his sense of self there, and his breath follows, light as air, the way a bee leaves one flower for another. Second, he can leave his own body by a deliberate path. The heel presses below, the breath is raised through heart, chest, throat and head, and it exits at the crown toward Brahman. The commentators read this as a practice that only a trained yogi under a teacher could approach. It belongs to the list of eighteen powers Krishna gives Uddhava, which this chapter lays out. Krishna's own warning about these powers is plain: for one who seeks him they are obstacles and a waste of time. Uddhava asked what yoga can do, so Krishna answers fully. He also shows that the body is something the self can leave. He asks Uddhava to know this and not to chase it.
A hand slips out of one glove and into another. The glove lies empty and shapeless, and the hand is whole and unchanged. The body is the glove, and the self is the hand that moves.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and watch your breath rise and fall without changing it. 2. Notice that something in you is doing the watching, and that it is not the breath. 3. Leave the pressing and lifting of breath described here alone. It is for a trained yogi with a teacher. 4. Then ask what you would rather give your attention to than any power.
A granddaughter sits beside her grandfather's hospital bed at three in the morning. She finds herself counting his breaths, and between one and the next she wonders where he is. Krishna's teaching gives that question a shape. In it, the breath is what holds a body together, and the one who lives in the body can be told apart from it. He describes a yogi who leaves the body on purpose, by a known path. She might simply keep watching. She may notice that the breath, which she has never once thought about, is the thing everything rests on. She may feel her own breathing slow to match his. Ordinary experience says that sitting beside a dying person is one of the places where people most plainly feel how large the question of life and body is. The verse does not make that vigil easier. It does not promise that her grandfather's death will be gentle, and it does not replace the nurses and doctors who attend him. It does not ask her to attempt anything it describes.
