One who means to play in the gardens of the gods should hold in mind the pure goodness that rests in me. Then the women of heaven come to him in their flying chariots, answering that goodness. Whatever he resolves in his mind, or whoever is devoted to me and joins his mind to me, the true, receives exactly that. A person who has come into my state, the ruler and controller, is blocked by nothing anywhere, and his command stands as mine does.

Three words carry the passage. Sattva is clarity, the pure and settled quality of mind, and here it is the goodness that rests in Krishna. Satya is the true, the real, and Krishna uses it for himself: mind joined to him is mind joined to what does not change. Madbhava means his state, being as he is, from bhava, becoming or being. Krishna tells Uddhava that a person who wants to enjoy the gods' pleasure garden holds Krishna's pure goodness in mind. Heavenly women then arrive in flying chariots, and their coming answers that goodness. Next he says that whatever such a person resolves, or whoever is devoted to him and fixes the mind on him, the true one, gets just that. Last, the person who has entered Krishna's state, who rules and controls, is obstructed by nothing, and his word holds as Krishna's holds. The heading calls this a description of the eighteen powers. Krishna is answering Uddhava's question about what a mind steadied on him can do. He lists the fruits plainly so that Uddhava knows them and is not fooled by them. Elsewhere in this teaching he calls them obstacles, a waste of time for one who wants him. The text offers none of this as something to chase. The commentators read it as a catalogue of what follows devotion, not of what devotion is for. It asks Uddhava to see where the power comes from. It comes from Krishna and from the mind joined to him. The one who reaches this state finds the powers are not his own to display.

A lamp set in a window lights the road outside. The lamp never asked to light the road; it was only kept burning. The powers are that spill of light on the road, and Krishna is the flame.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and name one thing you wished for today, such as a faster errand, an easier talk, or a small win. 2. Ask which part of the wish was about getting the thing, and which part was about the One you would rather have in mind. 3. Say one short line of praise or a name of Krishna aloud, once, slowly. 4. Tomorrow, notice how often your mind went back to the wish, and how often to him.

A woman waits at a bus stop at dusk after a long shift. Her feet ache, and she thinks how good it would be to be home by a snap of the fingers. The wish is ordinary and the tiredness real. The verse speaks to what happens next. Krishna teaches that the mind which holds him in view is the mind from which resolves are fulfilled and commands carried through. So the wish for power is not the first thing to reach for. She can let the longing for the shortcut come and go, then turn the same attention to him, and the bus, when it comes, is only a bus. Ordinary experience confirms that what the mind dwells on colours the whole evening, the wait included. The limit is plain. The verse promises her no faster journey and no power to bend the world, and it does not take away her tiredness. The flying chariots and the unblocked command belong to the tradition's own account of devotion, and today's medicine and psychology have no terms to translate them into. If she is ill or exhausted past the usual, a doctor is the right door.
